  I learnt more about surfing in a week at Shaka then I have done in any surf camps in France, Morocco or Sri Lanke. These guys know their stuff and are brilliant at helping you progress.
  
  Great food, wicked vibe and lovely people!

  Lodgings - basic, but generally clean and nice. Only give you one towel and you often have to ask for a clean new one, I understand this might be eco friendly, but leave more towels then people can re-use them at their own acord. Complementary toiletries are terrible so had to buy some from local supermarket, not what you would expect from 4 star. Shower fluctuated between hot and cold water, making showers not very enjoyable. Location is on the very outskirts of town, you will have to get taxis or rent ATVs to get anywhere which can be expensive and limiting.
  
  Food - Cooked by the on site chef who is really nice, but the food is basic, bland and repetitive - quality of ingredients unclear. For example, dinner is always just one course, no bread, no starter, no dessert. Beers are available, but no other soft drinks or alcoholic beverages. You would have to buy yourself and bring to dinner.
  
  Vibe - a little bit commune like, you have meals with the other guests and staff. Can feel like a boarding school.
  
  Beach/ surfing - the beach is good, the surf lessons are ok, thought would have learnt more in a week. Having taken some private lessons subsequently I have realised the lessons on offer are not that great.
  
  Staff - yoga lessons really good with Steve, staff generally ok, can be a little katty and fake at times.
  
  Conclusion - It is overpriced for the facilities, quality of lodgings and food. Good place to chill out, surf and do some yoga. Made the most of it and had a good time, but wouldn’t go back. Not as revolutionary as other reviews may imply.

  By far the BEST surf retreat in all of Costa Rica. Surf, yoga, great food, great staff, in an upscale but authentic pura vida atmosphere. Don't hesitate just book it!

  I had an amazing week at Shaka. Great location, a 300m walk from the beautiful and quiet beach at Playa Hermosa. Unbelievably welcoming staff who couldn't have done enough for you, top notch rooms, incredible food for brunch and dinner, great surf instructors, great yoga teachers and an incredible place to relax for a week. If you want to get away from it all and learn to surf in an incredible location this is the place to go. Couldn't recommend it any more highly!

  I spent 5 days at Shaka 11/17 thru 11/21/13 . It was fantastic! I learned the rudiments of surfing (thanx Jerry!) and practiced fantastic yoga as well (thanx Megan!). Shaka now has it's own beautiful teak yoga studio in the jungle. The company was great with a guy from G.B., a gal from Rland, a gal from Switzerland and 2 gals from Canada, as well as many others. The food was healthy and tasty (thanx Cristella! [sp?]) and the beds were made and cabinas cleaned daily (thanx Maria!). The cabinas are beautiful and they have A.C., though I didn't really need it. The beach was virtually deserted and the water was warm. The waves were 8' high the first day I was there-but you'll learn to surf in the white water left after the big waves break -very fun for a beginner like me and if you're an experienced surfer, you'll be in heaven.The sunsets on the beach were beautiful. I couldn't be happier with my experience and highly recommend Shaka. I'll be back!! When the sun goes down at 530 PM, don't worry-if you're lucky, maybe Jerry the surf teacher will be there to humor you with his many amusing stories!
