Not worth it.
Yes it is a decent hotel but it is not what it wants to be. It actually felt like a trap to be there.
We had only enough hot water for one shower (so only one person) and had to use the spa steam room (at an extra cost of $27 pp) to get warm. The area is pretty cold so it is not that great to miss the hot water and a good heating (the hotel provides a small and insufficient poket heater).
In this area, you will get wet if you go hiking (cloud forest) but at Savegre hotel, you won't get warm nor be able to dry your gears overnight.
I could add that except the waterfalls trail, the trails maintained by the hotels are boring with no view and limited wildlife.
The food tastes really average (tastes like homemade ready meal or a work canteen) and is quite expensive. Once you are at the hotel you are kinda trapped and have to pay for the meals there unless you want to drive mountain roads several times a day.
The bird watching is quite expensive ($45 pp) and yes you will see a Quetzal but that will be by the main valley road and in the sheer company of a couple (if not 3 or 4) vans of tourists.
In my opinion there is so much better to do in Costa Rica!
Head to Tortugero or the Osa peninsula and pass quickly through San Gerardo de Dota.
Deep in the valley of the Savegre river, this is an adventure to get to but sooooo worth it. Part of the Quetzales National Forest, this is a luscious garden-like mountain retreat. The grounds are well-maintained and very zen. There is a beautiful spa, hiking trails and BIRDS galore. I did the 4 hr birdwatching tour with Marino Chacon, a member of the original homesteading family. This was my birthday present to myself and it was idyllic.
Birds everywhere!! What a hidden gem in the midst of a beautiful forest!
Savegre Hotel is a beautiful resort located in the perfect place for bird watchers. Not a luxury hotel, and needs a little facelift. But very reasonable. The on-site restaurant has delicious food, and breakfast was included in the room price. Chef Jacques made dining there a real treat. I highly recommend this hotel if you're going to this area.
The location very quiet and isolated, the rooms are very spacecios and comfortable. Staff are very professional and took good care of us. Lastly breakfast is unbelievable, it really is.
4 star hotel appearance but 3 star camp site in reality
Pros: large rooms, lovely location
Cons:
No TV in any rooms
Rooms were freezing cold. No way to regulate room temperature (a/c machine). We had to have three mini heaters as it was winter/rainy season during our stay.
Food was way pricey.
Really good rooms and a lot to see in the area. Beautiful garden!!
Very comfortable rooms. Well maintained garden with hummingbird visitors. There are some amazing walks through the private nature reserve into primary cloud forest.
Food is good for two nights, but options do not change.
Beautiful . Great food. Helpful staff.
This time we only went for a late linch/early dinner. We were taking here by family members who live in CR. Having seen the property we will be making this a must see destination on our next trip.
Food is excellent, rooms are spacious and well equipped, grounds are amazing and the location is incredible.
Another fantastic time at this wonderful Savegre Lodge! This hotel has the history and experience to provide true insight into the natural wonders of the Savegre River, montane forests, and unique biodiversity of San Gerardo de Dota. A relaxing location in an intimate setting, with friendly and professional staff. We will definitely be back! Thank you for everything!
Amazing hummingbirds visit the property and specifically the bird feeder. The trails are well marked and gorgeous. We saw at a half dozen types of mushrooms!
Beautiful resort, beautiful layout. The hardest best workers I've seen at a resort. The food is great, easy access to trails and waterfalls. Its at the end of a long winding road about 9km from main highway but the trip is pretty easy. If you love nature, and especially love birds, its one of the best places you can find in Costa Rica. One tip: bring a jacket. It can get in the low 50's at night. Also, wifi in rooms is very good.
Wow! What a beautiful place. The cabins are adorable - down to the fine detail in the bathrooms, complete with candles and a box of matches! The chefs created wonderful food every day - the trout soup was to die for! Birding in this place is amazing. So many birds to see and hear - especially the Resplendant Quetzal. The staff were very helpful and super-friendly. Highly recommended.
