Catarata la Cangreja waterfall is a pretty nice hiking destination 6 km from the Las Pailas visitor center. The hike traverses tropical hardwood forest, semi-arid mountain meadow, and dry arroyo terrain. The park features another waterfall and volcanic fumaroles. The summit trail is closed due to volcanic activity.

Awesome display of volcanic activity. Boiling water holes, blurping mud pits, and sulphuric steam vents. Well kept paths wind through tree cover and open spaces. Great workout. Steps get to you by the end of the journey. And that was the shortest trail.

We went on a 3-KM “easy” hiking trail in the National Park. While the hike was paved, there are steps and incline/decline so wear sneakers and bring water. NO water or drinks are available for purchase there. We thought the trail was beautiful but perhaps $15 per person is a bit expensive — maybe that goes toward maintenance/conservation though. We saw a huge toad and lizard, and heard a howler monkey! Seeing geothermal activity was worth the walk!

Great hikes, bring lots of water, seriously it's dry and windy outside the wet season. There is a place to buy soda, sandwiches, ice cream and beer. After a long hard hike you'll be ready for a beer. Don't bother with a tour, just pay the $15 per adult and $5 per child, plus 700 Colones per person entrance and you will have a full day, see the different landscapes, and leave wiped and ready for a snooze before dinner.

Very nice 10k hike to a beautiful waterfall on well maintained trails. Plan on about 2 hours in each direction but it's worth it. Took a nice refreshing swim at the falls and enjoyed a hot spring that flows in left of the falls.

La Paiz part w/ volcano activities was nicely built, handicap accessible; Waterfall was beautiful but a long way walk, some area seemed no road that you had to climb thru erosions. One would wonder where they invest $15 U.S per day per person fee. But overall were worth the hike.
You paid another $15 for Santa Maria part of park: so under maintenance, very muddy, you couldn't walk over. Also had to cross two Rivers w/ rapid current. If you are afraid or physically not able to walk on rocks under current, skip this part.

Amazing hiking trails. The short loop is very accessible with paved trails. The longer trail to the falls was a lot harder but totally worth it.

Amazing waterfalls. They will say no swimming.. bring your suit and just be smart about it. 6k hike through hills up and down so worth it for the waterfall. Hot springs are ok Kinda boring but very short hike down.

Very diverse biology here, different climates suit different vegetation as well as different wildlife. Beautiful place - would highly suggest a tour guide to explain some of the things you'll see. Mud baths are a must

This park is a very interesting place. It's a volcanic park with fumerals , boiling mud pots, steam vents, hot water creeks and lots of wildlife.
I'd say you should plan for at least a three hour visit. Expect to do some hiking. I'd bring a picnic lunch. The ride in is interesting. Parking in a big lot by the entrance. You don't need a paid guide. In fact it's more fun to wander around alone.
If your into something a bit more strenuous , hike to either crater ( Rincon de la Vieja or Santa Maria.

From the Las Pailas ranger station there is an awesome trail with platforms to view volcanic features at a closer distance than Yellowstone. I highly recommend walking down the first 200 meters of the waterfall trail. It goes through a lush meadow full of countless species of butterfly that twirl around you as you enter the jungle. It was surreal and amazing to be surrounded with the beautiful insects. In the jungle we saw capuchins and a koati as well as snakes, lizards, and birds. The hike to the Escondida waterfall was a very good challenge and pushed me to my limit as an average hiker. The waterfall itself was underwhelming, but the journey was great.

While the cater trail was closed, many of the other trailers were open. If you stop to look around, you can see the local wildlife including monkeys. All the paths for the Las Pailas trail are well marked and not too difficult.

Well worth the drive to see the mini Yellowstone park with the bubbling mud pools and steam vents. Easy to do with kids on the simple trail loop

Beautiful trails, you can see boiling mudpots, waterfalls, rainforest plants. The easiest trail is about 2.5 hours and it is marked perfectly. Highly recommended.

It has nice well marked trails. The steam vents and boiling mud are pretty interesting. The waterfall is nice as well. The park headquarters is brand new, so it is very nice.

Beautiful mountainous and volcanic site, with lots of hiking trails, some with sulfur and mud pots, and some with deep forest environments and waterfalls. It's not difficult to get to, and the road is actually usable even without a 4x4.

This is a place where we did not actually hire a guide. We hiked the short trails with volcanic sites in the morning, and then took the long (4 hours!) waterfall trail in the afternoon. The park is high enough in the mountains that the temperature is actually cool (but not cold), even at noon.
