This museum includes the gold, coin/bill, and other art collections of the Banco Central (Central Bank), and it's housed below street level, at Plaza de la Cultura, which made it confusing to find at first. It's worth a visit and the entrance is very affordable. I particularly loved the Coin exhibit, and listening to the engaged guide/security person who was clearly doing the perfect job, as he was a history buff. Also the museum store, while small, was lovely.

An interesting museum combining exhibits about gold, Costa Rican currency and the pre-history of the region.
Since there is not much else to see in San Jose this one is worth a visit.

A must ! If you are interested in archeology and precolumbian art. Situated in the heart of the city it is easy to find at plaza de los culturas Just beside the old national theater (which is worth to visit as well,) I spent more than two hours at the Museum - descriptions are in Spanish and English. The cottage Rica gold museum a bit expensive considering you'll see it in less than an hour but just the building is well worth it, if you are into architecture it's beautiful and well designed, their exhibits are a little bit poor in content but they're interesting.

Really cool collection of currency on the first floor, and native gold trinkets and artifacts from the pre Colombian era downstairs. Generally a cool exhibit with some out of place oddities here and there.

This wide ranging set of exhibits is a must see, especially the pre-columbian exhibit. The other exhibits (coins and modern art) come under the ticket for the gold exhibit.

Honestly, the Pre-Columbian Gold Museum, and Numismatic Museum are a little bit of a let-down, especially given the higher entry prices charged to foreigners. Sure, there's some cool old stuff to see, but the coin museum part is very brief, and the whole experience doesn't quite live up to the hype. The kids were bored very quickly, and the gift shop is only good for some reproduction jewelry. Consider other options first.

If you happen to have some extra time in San Jose definitely pay a visit. The entrance is about $10 per person. You could do the entire museum in less than an hour. Its not s Smithsonian so adjust your expectations. The museum does give you a very good overview of the Costa Rican history during Pre and Post Columbian era.

Museum about money and gold history in Costa Rica. The interior design is very delightful. The building includes three stories. The variety of golden arts in different size are amazing.
