This hotel is a 3 at best. I was in building 14. Th room is old and dirty. Toilet doesn’t flush well. The shower head had to be held while showering. The bathroom sink was a very slow drain. Not only were there cock roaches in the room, my Dr. confirmed several bites from sleeping were in fact bed bug bites!! I asked for the these items to be fixed and it was never done. I received a face clothe 3 of the 6 nights. I hung my cloth each day hoping they would not take it, they did. You do not receive all inclusive service. Definitely consider this resort false advertisement! Room service is an extra cost for everything and you’re lucky to get it 3 hours after ordering. You receive 2 bottles of water a day absolutely no more. I was told to drink the water from the faucet if you want more. What??? Don’t get me wrong. I love Costa Rica and will go back but never to this resort!! Staff really doesn’t care unless you tip them for everything then they become a bit attentive. Very sad as the resort could be a fabulous place with proper management and maintenance. Scenery and views are fabulous. I was hoping for much more in my first experience in Costa Rica.

The area is beautiful and the resort was quite nice. They mistakenly gave our rooms away, but were able to find acceptable rooms, and made up for it with gifts and complimentary gold level service. The staff are very friendly and helpful.
They are very serious about not having children on the property. We did not see a aingle child at the resort; consequently, the resort was very peaceful.
They have lots of daily activities and fun celebrations for events like New Year's Eve. It's really close to Playa Tamarindo and offers great views and ocean access.

A Fairly nice resort with all the amenities you'd expect from an all-inclusive. However, what really puts it over the top is the friendliness of the staff and the wildlife on the premise - it wasn't unusual to see a variety of birds, howler monkeys in the trees and (very) large lizards crawling around and begging for mango peices.

The beach was also fairly nice and, if you go down at night with a flashlight, you can see tons of hermit crabs scuttling around.

The welcome package at the spa is also worth doing, and gave one of the best massages I've ever had.

This place is simply awesome. Great location on the Papagayo Gulf. The daily activities provided by the facility were great. The pools and beach where great. The food and drinks were great. Nightly entertainment could be better. Overall - amazing.

Resort is beautiful and very relaxing. Staff is very efficient and friendly. Rooms are nice, and drinks are replenished every day (beer, water, soda). Although not located right on a beach, as you have to walk down to a beach, both pools offer everything you might want. Alex helped us book our tours, and we highly recommend him. Omar is great, as well, but we mostly worked with Alex for booking restaurants and tours. Omar and Alex are both very knowledgeable about tours and local activities and made the experience so much easier.

Excellent service and friendly staff. The buffet food was decent and the a la cart restaurants were really good. Our room was nice and clean and room service was good every day. Drinks were good at all the bars, There's poolside service at the main pool and another pool with a swim up bar. There are two buffet restaurants, one is more of a snack bar. We received an excellent massage package at the spa and friendly service, and the beach on the resort is really nice. Make sure to talk to Roberto on the beach for really good excursions! They're cheaper than the excursions the tour office at the resort offers but the exact same excursions most of the time and with fewer people to a group so its more intimate. Lots of birds and iguanas all over the resort!

We absolutely loved our time at Occidental Papagayo! The all inclusive meal options were always very tasty and enjoyable. The room was incredibly comfortable and the housekeeping did a great job at cleaning up for us, considering how much sand was tracked in as the result of spending time on the beach.

The pools are large and we always had plenty of space to enjoy spending time with our little group without being crowded by other people. The location was perfect for several smaller adventures to other local beaches and even a river rafting excursion. We'll definitely be coming back!!

Went there for our honey moon a few weeks ago!!!! Absolutely fabulous resort. The food was amazing and the staff was even better. Brian at the bar in the discotheque and swim up bar was fantastic. The young man from Canada was amazing and Omar the premium check host was just as wonderful. The accommodations were gorgeous and we will be back.

The place were very nice, clean, quiet and the service was very good, many of the people who work there are so friendly specially Francine Solis in reception. For sure I recommend this hotel, you'll not regret, it has 90% of good things and 10% of little details to improve. Thanks Barceló Hotels and Resorts and Occidental Papagayo Adults Only for this experience we just had.

This is a very relaxing resort. The staff was friendly and the rooms and facility were clean. The food was good at the buffet and the 2 restaurants (Oriental & Italian) were good as well. It is true that you are given only 2 beers in your fridge daily and we asked for more but were told no. I would say the bar around the pool could stay open past 5:30 pm and the beach bar later than 3:00 pm. The drinks did not seem weak and were very good. We made some great friends and overall had a great time. We did several excursions from the hotel (additional $$ outside our all inclusive) and Costa Rica is a beautiful place with very friendly and happy people.

Over all a great place to visit, been here twice and as a location, it doesn't disappoint you. The ocean is very calm. The food is very good. It's an adults only hotel, which is great for families/couples/friends that would prefer not having kids around.

As it happened on the previous trip, the entertainment options are not top notch. For example, the ping pong/billiards table area closes at 5pm. So, after that time, if you, for example, wanted to play billiards, you'll have to wait until after 9.30 pm when the disco opens, where they have another billiards table. The ping pong/billiards table area, should close at around 8pm.

The snacks options during the disco schedule should be larger, it is very limited.

There used to be a bar very close to the beach, this time it was closed. Same thing with a tiny bar stand next to the pool, which was very useful, since you didn't need to wait for one of the servers to show up and didn't need to walk to the snacks area to order a drink, causing that area's floor to get wet a lot more often, which means they have to dry it more frequently

After several of months of planning and reading reviews; decided to see resort for myself and hoped for the best. Upon arriving we were informed we had NO reservation (glad we printed our travel doc). Staff appeared to be NOT EAGER to locate reservation and asked for us to wait after waiting 2 hours at this point. Our other guest (we invited) had no problem with their reservations. After waiting for over 2hrs, our room was ready. At this point we were already drained. Upon entering the room, my wife “cried like a baby”. The room was NO upgrade as indicated in our package, no view other than dirt, bushes and the room was outdated. At this point, management got involved and moved us to a suite with better view. Per our package we were supposed to get bed-turn down every night, welcome gift etc:. We received nothing! At this point we wanted to just enjoy the vacation. The resort should NOT be Adult Only. There is nothing to do other than the pool (little activities), lite nightly entertainment and only two specialty restaurants. We took the shuttle ($12 round trip) to Coco Beach, in which we had to wait for return transportation for over 1.5 hours. Fabio the guy, who make reservations, is a total JERK. He needs a class on better customer service. The hotel staff is very nice and if you’re not into raccoons and lizards running around; this is not your place. Our room key stopped working three-times; in which you must take a ride or long walk to guest service. If you have any health issues (heart, legs and or back) this resort is NOT for you. Every point of location is a LONG walk and may include stairs. Housekeeping try to avoid replacing towels and other room items; in which cleaning is not the very best. The liquor is watered down (review some dark liquors and you will see the color is lighter than normal). I will go back to Costa Rica, But NOT this hotel. Wish spouse could have had a better surprise than this place.

This hotel is the worst hotel that I have been in my life. Believe me I 've in the entire Caribbean, cuba, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Bahamas etc. And never like this. The air conditioner is no working if you from USA consider and think two time before choosing this hotel. The buffet is ridiculous. Please I have been in 4 stars hotel even better.

Adults only is a waste of money. They shut half the resort down at 5 and only serve alcohol till 11. The "stocked bar" is 2 beers. If your looking for "1880s puritan style fun", then go ahead. For anyone else looking, your better off staying at home with a kiddie pool and a case of beer.

Staff was very nice, overall facilities were decent, though could use a bit of a refresh. Extremely comfortable bed and pillows in the room, which also had a nice view. Perhaps just because we are spoiled at home with very authentic cuisine, the Oriental a la carte restaurant was ok at best, though once again the servers were impeccable. One area for improvement would be the air conditioning in our room. While capable of making the room very comfortable, the condenser and or filter seemed responsible for a musty odour.

My wife and I stayed for 3 days last March. The resort is nice and our room had a great view of the ocean. Most of the staff was pleasant, and the guy who runs kayaking/snorkeling was awesome. They included a complimentary massage which was a nice way to end the vacation.

There are a few things that were disappointing. The food was very mediocre, even at the weird "specialty" restaurants. The beach space is nice but limited, and there are annoying sales people there. Also, don't send postcards from the gift shop- one worker told us it was $2.50 per card, and the next night we went back and a different worker tried to charge us $5 per card!

We wouldn't stay again, but for the price it was a good experience.

We had our wedding at the Occidental Grand Papagayo and could not have had a better experience. It was incredible!!! We wanted a low key, affordable option for our guests to come and experience Costa Rica while not sacrificing the wedding experience. While it is not the 4-seasons, we got way more than what we paid for. I could go on and on - we had 65 guests and everyone had a blast. The best part was the exceptional staff catering to all of our needs. A+++++ A very special shout out to the best wedding coordinator ever - Idania!!!

This is a nice little resort. I only got to stay one night, so I didn't really get to take it all in. What I got to see was a small, secluded beach. It had a designated swimming area due to the rocks the rocks that surrounded it. These rocks made a bit of a break water, but swimming on the other side could be dangerous. The food was delicious, and definitely more regional. A seafood paella was served at supper that was delicious. Breakfast had regional specialties, as well as food that non-adventurous Americans could enjoy enjoy. The staff was friendly, but maybe a little understaffed.
