This hotel sits right in the thick of things. Room was ok. It was clean. Only real disappointment was my water didn't get very hot. My other friends stated theirs did however mine did not.

Pros:Hotel is clean and staff is very tentative, Cons: location is no Bueno, homeless transients, drug addicts, street hustlers on every corner.

Our stay in Costa Rica was bookended by two nights at Balmoral. The rooms are fine. The mattresses both nights were a little hard, but the rooms were pretty soundproof on the busy city street. On our last night we ate at the restaurant - that was a huge mistake. Our food was forgotten. No apology was made as we sat for a full hour watching the tables around us get their food. We tried to get the attention of the waitress but she ignored us completely, not even refilling our drinks. We were within minutes of leaving when she finally apologized for the wait. Minutes later the appetizer and entrees come out at once, all cold. So, in our experience - stay at the hotel, but do not eat at the restaurant.

Nice, clean hotel in a central location. Friendly staff. Love their cozy cafe with the view of the pedestrian thoroughfare where they serve the breakfast buffet.

Centrally located near museums, shopping. Restaurant is fine. Staff is nice and helpful. The room is small as opposed to others I've stayed in in San Jose but not bad. Clean. Neither the hairdryer or room safe worked which was a bummer. I booked through hotel.com, usually simple but they charged my credit card when I said I'd pay at hotel, then did not send me a confirmation of payment which led to confusion at check out.

It was horrible, the shower wasn't cleaned there was hair all over the curtain. The staff wasn't friendly at all. I was really disappointed.

We were able to get our room for $100 a night. Well worth it. A breakfast buffet is included each morning. Its right on the walkable strip. Near a bunch of restaurants, bars etc. Has a gym but NO pool. AC was good. Not too much outside noise in the room we had. Safes were avaiable in the rooms.
