Place is open from 8am-12pm. Rumored to have the ex chairman's body as wax figure rather than the real body.

For Curiosities only. Impressive structure. Go for a visit. Like all things in China, go early! Early as in 15 to 20 minutes prior to opening Early.

Make sure you visit this place carrying the lightest load possible. Otherwise you'll have to check your backpack in somewhere.

They will not let you take photos inside and will keep the line moving.

Try not to be alarmed if people start weeping when they see Mao.

Photos are from the entrance and exit.

Huuuge building, maybe not so beautiful but it epitomizes power of China and its leader(s).

Free admittance and an interesting building, for anyone interested in the modern China history, this is a place that they'll want to visit. Vide variety of Mao souvenirs after the exit. Keep in mind it is usually open only in the morning.

Even bags are not allowed inside and Mao's body looks like a fake one.

"1 star, political history motivated and long lines to see a dead body" for here would be like saying "1 star, boring history motivated and long lines to see a statue" for the lincoln memorial. I liked it.

This is a very important location for the PRC, it is equivalent to seeing such monuments in the US as The Lincoln Memorial. Remember that China's history surpasses that of the US by centuries. As so many other reviews before me posted, tough security requirements and crowded. Once you are here you are on government land, so entry and exits are maned by guards. The Monument itself is stunning. Definitely something I will take with me.

Located within Tiananmen Square. For tourist, the Mausoleum is a curiosity; for locals, its a respectful homage. You need to follow all the guidelines to enter. No bags, no hats, no earphones, no photos. This is all enforced, and you feel how important Mao is to the people. The lines move quickly. There's no standing still since the guards move you along. You probably pass through viewing area within 2-3 minutes.
