I've always wanted to climb to the top of the Lions and I finally had the chance to do it! It took us 10 hours to complete the 20+ km trek from the Cypress Bowl parking lot to the top of the West Lion and then down to Lions Bay. Remember if you're going this route you can skip both Unnecessary Mountain peaks. And make sure you have enough water. The West Lion peak isn't particularly difficult to scale and is just considered a class 3 scramble, but there are two stretches on the easiest route where you are dangerously exposed and a fall would be fatal. The markings are there so make sure you follow them! So happy to check this one off the list!
After seeing it every day for five years, the satisfaction of having climbed it is very high! Extremely rewarding peak! Only attempt when dry and clear! Marking not always clear.
West Lion is an iconic mountain in Cypress Provincial Park, which is considered a symbol of Vancouver alongside its sister mountain East Lion. West Lion can be accessed either from Lions Bay via Lions Binkert trail or from Cypress parking lot via Howe Sound Crest Trail. The summit offers breathtaking views in all direction. West Lion summit scramble should only be attempted by expert hikers with some climbing and route finding skills, as the path to the summit has several very steep exposed sections and is not well marked.
Baller hike if you actually climb the summit. It's doable without ropes but I wont advise that route.
Very tough mountain trail
Awesome hike and spectacular views! About an 8hr venture from trailhead to summit and back if you go from lions bay. I'd give it 5 stars if there wasn't paid parking ($8 a day, plus the machine acts up quite a bit) 😒 plus there are a tonne of bugs, definitely bring spray. The summit is very dangerous to get to, but skilled climbers/hikers should make it fine. Most people should be able to make it to the plateau, which is about 50m below the summit. Part of the trail is covered in snow year round so make sure you have good boots and an ample supply of water. (Two of us went though 5Litres) keep an eye out for black bears! We ran into a pretty calm one but they are out there and can be sneaked up on accidentally pretty fast.
Amazing spot but not easy to get to. Long hike across the Howe Sound Crest Trail (4-6 hours 1 way) with lots of ups and downs, or a hard grunt up from Lions Bay (also 4-6 hours 1 way). Don't expect to find water along either route unless there is still snow on the ground that you can melt. The route up and down is sketchy and dangerous, multiple injuries and deaths of poorly prepared people trying to reach the summit. The view is great from the base so just enjoy that if you are not an experienced climber.
After about two hours walk on a very beautiful and maybe hard for someone who doesn't hike a lot , you can reach in this beautiful and dreamy spot. Take water and food .
