The Russians have The Group of Five aka The Five, a name given to a team of five Russian composers who united in the 1860s to develop an authentic national school of music. But the Canadians have The Group of Seven, a name reserved for an association of seven European descent landscape painters formed in the early 1900s. Their originality is striking. Seeing their works, one soon notices that they are a moving rendition of the European settlers' emotional reaction to the great landscapes of Canada, including the Arctic. This art collection located in a magnificent forest should be a must for any self respecting foreign or Canadian tourist.

Surprised that there wasn't more Group of Seven work here. AGO has way more. Klienburg setting is lovely. Would have liked to see the inside on Tom Thompson's house (not just the outside.) I found some of the exhibits too dark (lighting to low--strained my eyes), and some lighting casts a shadow from the frame onto the work.
Really poor service in the restaurant considering the price. Food was good though.response / report this review -

Restaurant was pricey and super slow. 45 min for soup and sandwich really cut down our time for the galleries. Alex Janvier exibit was amazing! Not a huge gallery overall though. We just did the tour in 2 hours, but had to skip the video presentations. Lots of nooks with easy chairs and beautiful views out over the valley.

Nice collection of the Group of Seven artwork. Located on a beautiful conservation area with extensive walking paths. Affordable fees (senior, adult and child rates) plus a parking fee. Easy to get to by car, a little outside of Toronto. A cafe/restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating available. Wheelchair and stroller accessible (elevators). Family friendly. I recommend a short visit here, schedule approximately 2-3 hours.

Very poor service at parking kiosk. Had a free admission voucher but would not honour parking. Saved the hassle (and the $7) by parking offsite and enjoyed a 5 minute walk through the beautiful trails For those without a free pass - the gallery is limited so suggest you pay the extra $1.50 and go to AGO.

Fantastic exhibits on now (Aug 14/17). Beautiful grounds. Parking ($7) and admisison ($18) a bit pricey for a small gallery but the amazing art and beautiful building are worth it.

A beautiful setting and a fantastic collection of Canadian art curated with intelligence and sensitivity. I found the day a bit marred by the heavy-handedness of the monitors throughout the exhibit; they were on top of me every time they felt i was too close to the art, or if they thought i was going to take a photograph. I even saw them being rather stern with some kids telling them they had to stay with adults. The kids were just walking about on their own, they were not wild or disruptive. A gallery should be a joyous place of exploration, not a stern panopticon reminiscent of high school detention. In spite of how wonderful i think this gallery is, i think it has to make a choice as to whether it wants to become a place of beauty, jouissance and celebration of Canadian art or a stern church-like place of worship for the submissive, obedient elite. I am an art fanatic and i felt guilty after two reprimands; this might not be a destination for the less devout.

We always love going to McMichael. This exhibit surpasses in its uniqueness. Seven artisans and performers that display their love for the gallery made this an experience for all to enjoy.

Beautiful gallery and gift shop. Friendly and helpful staff. The gallery is almost devoid of any art by the Group of Seven - other than Lauren Harris - but they have a good selection of other local and Canadian art.

I ran a photography camp there for March break and it was great to see that the staff there were all about making the experience for the kids the best it could be! I cant wait to be back for the August photography summer camps! I didn't have a telephoto lens but the kids and I saw this otter on our walkabout.

The McMichael Gallery is a real jewel. They always have interesting exhibitions. The latest, featuring Group of Seven artist Lawren Harris was fantastic. Considering his famous landscape paintings were just at the AGO I think it was a bold step to show his abstracts in the same year.
I have to say that I loved both shows, but felt more engaged with the McMichael show. His pieces in this style really speak to me.

So disappointed. My husband and I went to see examples of the famous Group of Seven and Tom Thompson art but hardly any was on display. 4 galleries were closed and 4 galleries were devoted to Lawren Harris, mostly in his Abstract period. There were also 2 galleries of Inuit art; that was 10 out of the 14 available galleries. We only saw a couple of paintings done by each of the Group's artists.
Since the Collection's reputation is built around the Group of Seven and Tom Thompson, we really expected more from our visit. Also, the website content does not accurately reflect the actual content of the galleries; it seems to imply much more of a Group of Seven/Tom Thompson content in your galleries.

Beautiful place. Great Canadian art, nice open old style architecture. The grounds are gorgeous with really nice walking paths. Just a nice jewel right outside of the city
