Dynamic routes lots of power moves which are still fun, people and staff are nice, gym equipment standards are low, rope is old, too short, kinked and hard to belay with ease, floors wonky. Some maintenance is def needed. I wouldn't come back here unless I was lead climbing and bringing my own gear. Staff wouldn't teach a new climber eventhough we would pay unless it was a class.
Either way since safety doesn't seem like a concern if I was a new climber I'd go to Basecamp or Rock Oasis they are all about safety and are willing to teach safety to any new climber.
Had a great time, Ended up being just under $40 per person including equipment, instruction and climbing time.
Two of us went for the beginner lesson tonight after a friend who goes often recommended. The woman doing the training was awesome, super patient and attentive. The beginner course lasted 2 hours and went over everything extensively. I was super nervous when I got there, but by the end my friend and I felt super comfortable. The trainer hung around for a long time after the class was over to make sure everyones questions had been answered and to observe and help while we paired off. Would defintaley recommend
Great indoor climbing gym. This was my first visit to this gym and the staff was very helpful
Great place to climb, lots of top rope routes at varying levels. Plenty of bouldering. Good, clean change rooms with lockers.
The space is big for a downtown gym, but pricey ($22 for a day pass). The layout can make it feel pretty crowded, because the hallway to the route climbing area runs through the middle of the bouldering area where everyone is sitting to watch their friends and wait their turn.
The bouldering section is incredibly cluttered, with taped routes in between a whole lot of untaped holds that I guess are for traversing or freestyle bouldering.
They don't have a water fountain, and there's only one sink in the washroom, so fill up a water bottle before you go.
For the price and based on the number of people I know who come here, I expected better.
Great gym, lots of routes of varying levels and good bouldering space. Routes changed on a fairy frequent basis. Staff do a good job of teaching.
Consistent with other reviews, I was disappointed overall. The routes were decent but far too packed (can't fault them for being popular I guess), the staff were patronizing and unfriendly. I was a member for a year and decided to call it quits when I brought two beginners on separate occasions, whom the staff treated as burdens and were very unhelpful.
Really enjoyed the experience here. Can be busy. There are lots of different difficulties that make it great for beginners to more advanced climbing.
Having learned to climb at another gym in Toronto I was excited to try a new gym. Joe Rockhead's is around the corner from where I live so it would be super handy to go there. Honestly, I was really disappointed with the customer service and greeting. The girl who works the front desk is not friendly and slightly patronizing. It would put me off ever returning there again. It feels like a bit of a judging environment which I really haven't experienced elsewhere and is disappointing.
Having said that, The routes are very good and challenging. I felt like the routes really push you and came away having had a good work out. That's a huge benefit for me. The climbs are high too which is nice.
I wouldn't recommend this gym to first time climbers. If I had of went here to learn, I wouldn't have climbed again. The atmosphere is a little bit elitist. First impressions do last sadly. Good place to go for a good climbing challenge, don't expect much more.
They have some really tall walls here, so it's good for endurance training. Setting is very old school, a lot like real rock, but often feels stale and repetitive. Still, if your priorities in the gym are to train for outdoors sport, I think this is a great spot.
The bouldering area straight up sucks, with very few defined routes. The padding on the ground is highly inadequate making this a great place to break an ankle.
I love Joe's. I consider it my second home! On its busier nights, you can find yourself waiting around to find a route you want to do, because its usually taken, and the routes do not get switched out very frequently, but there is excellent top rope, lead, and bouldering selection! There is also a lot of room and I never feel like you are in dangerous of hitting other people in the walls or the ground when you're climbing. Everyone is also so supportive and friendly! If you're stuck on a climb, its likely a complete stranger will help you out ;)
