Having lived in this neighbourhood my entire adolescent life I've seen this facility go through many owners. Unfortunately this facility has had many issues including animal care inquiries over the years and no longer has as wide a variety of animals as it once did. To have the name "Greater Vancouver Zoo" many out of towners arrive with expectations that are not realistic. This is better likened to a farm with some exotic animals rather than a professional zoo. Do not visit this facility with comparison expectations to other zoos such as Calgary or Seattle as you will be disappointed. If ticket/food/services (such as bike rental) prices were more reasonable I would consider a better rating. On the positive, if you've splurged for a season pass then using this facility to go on walks/runs rather than forest trails is a nice change of pace.
Love the openess of the zoo. Lots of walking which we enjoy. Many different kind of animals. The enclosures are large so you can't always see the animals but they have enough animals you always feel like you have seen lots!
We visited in mid October with kids. Most of comments about the facilities of the zoo are correct. They are old. And unfortunately, the train is currently out of service for this season. But, kids like the zoo for its environment and the animals they keep. We did eat at the zoo but the prices at the concession seem reasonable.
We went at 4:00 pm (the zoo closes at 7:00pm), most of the animals were either sleeping or in their barns. And there is no way to see the animals properly in their barns. There was only one show at 5:00 (the Giraffe snack).
I understand that they have no control over the animals so they can be awake or moving around during that time for us to see them. But at least they should reduce their working hours. We paid 53$ to just walk around!!!!
Just spent a day at the zoo and I have nothing but good things to say.
The animals had huge enclosures and each had a small house if they wanted to retreat from the outdoors. They all had enrichment items (toys) and looked healthy and content.
This was my first time at the greater Vancouver zoo and I was honestly pleasantly surprised.
Obviously this is a small zoo so they didn't have all the whistles and bells that larger zoos have. If you want a deluxe entertainment experience this is not the place. If you want to stroll around and admire some well cared for exotic animals, this is the place.
They also had many animals local to BC and Canada, I found out from one of the staff all of these are non releasable rescue animals. All the more reason to support this great little place.
Don't listen to the bad reviews, go see for yourself if you're interested. You won't be disappointed.
This zoo had all the animals we would expect to see at a zoo .favorite part of the whole trip was the Lions and hippos and giraffes heck I loved them all .wonderful spot .
I have noticed that there are a lot of critical reviews of this zoo and granted it's not the best zoo especially compared to Seattle but my family has an annual pass and it's a really nice place to come and spend a day outdoors with the kids so although single-admission is a bit expensive I think that having a year pass is pretty decent and you become more appreciative of what the zoo has to offer
While it's wonderful and educational to visit the zoo with kids, I couldn't get over how sad this place is - the exhibits are aging and in severe need of repair. The habitats are small, and they are encircled by large, chain link fences, so you don't even get to see the animals very well. The tiger habitat was tiny, and the poor alligators had no room to do much of anything. Either this place needs a MAJOR investment to dramatically improve the habitats, or it needs to shut down and send these animals to homes where they can live out their lives comfortably.
Not a fancy zoo but a good selection of animals that you can get close to in some cases. Simple layout means you won't get lost and see everything without a lot of backtracking. Inexpensive admission price. Small train ride circles entire property.
Had a fantastic time there today with our daughter. Very quiet and 50% during February. Great space and thoroughly enjoyed walking around! Will be back again for sure
