I recorded a section of a book this weekend that was, maybe, a little too close to home. But I used it, allowing my voice to quaver and break, giving the character all the emotion I felt. It wasn't easy, but it was authentic.

There's an interesting discussion going on among narrators and voice actors. Is it better to sit or to stand when recording? There's no right answer, of course; it's all about individual choice and comfort.
I prefer to stand. My recent acting work was in live audience storytelling and I'm used to speaking from a standing position. Standing allows me to fill my lungs with air and to wave my hands around when I speak. It's what comes naturally to me.

I have enforced breaks. There's a cathedral a couple of blocks from me and their chiming carillon is the one sound that breaks through my studio wall. Now I want coffee whenever I hear a bell ring.
