Great place & people!
Great beach, not easy to find in Belize
How soon can we come back?! Our stay at Turtle Cove was a fantastic experience, from start to finish. Brian was an excellent host, and the members of his staff were equally hospitable. Cookie and Ervin were always available and took great care of us. It was nice to be able to pick the brains of true locals and get a feel for the history of Belize, the best local fishing spots, and tips for navigating Ambergris. The food at the on-site restaurant (John's Escape) exceeded our expectations. We ate lunch and dinner there nearly every day (breakfast is not offered at the on-site restaurant, so plan accordingly), and we never had a bad meal. The bar is stocked with the standard spirits and plenty of Belikin (local beer), of course. Dishes ranged from fresh ceviche, to fried fish, to shrimp and steak. Or you can keep it simple with a pizza and Belikin (which really hits the spot after a long day of fishing and snorkeling). If you're looking to save money on dining, the stocked kitchen in your room makes it easy to cook. This was our first trip to Belize and we didn't have any particular plans except to familiarize ourselves with Amberigs, and get in plenty of fishing and snorkeling. Bonefish were plentiful along the beachfront. I caught several bones on fly while walking the beaches and piers early in the morning. Bonefish, barracuda, and tarpon can also be caught in the lagoon area heading towards Secret Beach. You can always book a guide, of course, but if you want to DIY it, you can certainly do so. We only took one guided excursion this trip, on Brian's recommendation, to snorkel Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley. We've snorkeled all over the Caribbean, and this was by far the best snorkeling we've experienced. I definitely recommend the Hol Chan trip. Brian set us up with a golf cart rental, and I'm glad we made that decision. If you plan to sit on the beach and never leave the house, the golf cart may not be necessary. But if you want to really get out and explore the island, the golf cart is the only way to go. All in all, we had a fabulous trip and made a ton of great memories. We can't wait to come back, and next time we plan to bring our daughter with us. Brian assured us that kids are always welcome at his place, and the beach area right in front of the property would make a great and safe playground for kids of all ages. And when they get tired of the sand, they can always go for a swim in the pool.
