We stayed 2 nights in the tree house and loved our stay. Cabin is clean and river view is very pretty. Mel and Ed are excellent cooks and very hospitable. Their son is a great tour guide. We are glad we did the caves and canoe ride. Thank you!

Clean, comfortable, peaceful, and beautiful. Mel, Ed, and Jusef could not have been more accommodating. Delicious, home-cooked breakfast and dinner. Canoe down the serene Belize River, hike through the Baboon Sanctuary. About 30 minutes from the International Airport.

Ed, Mel, and their family have a lovely little place here. The cabins are cozy and spacious very charming. It is right on the Belize River, and we saw the resident troupe of howler monkeys every night.

I highly recommend the the 4 night package at the Howler Monkey Resort. It was one of our best vacations ever! We were celebrating our 35th anniversary. Mel and Ed made our stay so enjoyable. They took care of everything, we didn't have to worry about transportation, excursions or food. They set everything up and cooked delicious meals. We had the best tour guides on the excursions to the ruins and cave tubing. Their son drove us to all the excursions and he even showed us around the Belize Zoo! Transportation from the airport and to the ferry landing was a plus! No worries! Stress free! Great vacation! June 2017

My family and I had an incredibly relaxing and homey time here. The river and monkeys were magical. Thank you so much for the kind and generous hospitality. We learned a lot about Belizean history and current politics from our hosts!

It's a lovely little set of cabins on the river maintained by a family of locals. The food was humble, but divine. You eat what they serve. My cabin had everything I needed. The outlets were compatible with my phone. There was plenty of water in the main community area. They picked me up from the air port, took me to all the sites, arranged the tours, provided food, and Were some of the nicest people you could ever meet. I can't wait to go back to Belize for just the resort. I saw the MONKEYS on day 1,and it was a blast just sitting in the grass watching them. There is nothing negative to say. I couldn't have been happier.

We (my husband and I) had a wonderful time at this location. Since at that time we were the only guests, we felt that we had the run of the resort. We had a nice, air conditioned cabin that was cleaned every day while we were out on adventures as part of our package. The oldest son, who was friendly and full of historic knowledge about the area was our main guide and greeter. He is smart and has a witty sense of humor.
We were cooked breakfast and dinner each day we were there. The food was fantastic. We ate in the dinning room of the lodge, by ourselves. We found out later that the younger son does not arrive home from school, until around dinner time, so they spend dinner time as family time.
The pool is treated river water and it too was cleaned daily while we were there. Every night we walked the jungle trail and each time noticed something different. It was a nice easy walk.
All in all we really enjoyed our time at the Howler Monkey Resort!response / report this review -

The gap between expectation and reality at this ‘resort’ was so huge a visit here can only come as a let-down and a significant disappointment. In the couple of months we spent backpacking around Central America it was the worst place we stayed at and we couldn’t wait to leave. Its run by a couple and their son; the father appeared to do the cooking and was reasonably hospitable when you saw him, but the son was a terrible host; surly, abrupt, unhelpful and arrogantly rude. It was obvious he didn’t want to be there or participate in the family business. Despite being friendly and helpful on email the mother was non-existent throughout our visit. There were no other staff. We were the only ones staying at the resort, as other travellers had wisely chosen elsewhere. It felt like we were unwelcome distant family guests who you see once a year at Christmas.
‘Resort’ as a descriptor is a farfetched term for the collection of poorly built huts on the site. Yes, our hut had air con which fought to cool a room with dodgy slat louvre windows that let both the open air and flying bugs in, no matter how tight you closed them. Honestly, there were holes in the brickwork where termites invaded on our third evening and we battled to kill them quick enough and used sticky tape to patch up the holes and plug sockets to keep us free of the invasion. In any event all four of us left with so many insect bites that was unprecedented on our trip so far, in any country/ accommodation. The room was only cleaned once in our 3 night stay, and it wasn’t as if they were rushed off their feet with other guests, the hosts just don’t have any normal standards or energy to make an effort for their guests. The ‘swimming pool’ is full of murky (apparently ‘treated’)river water and garnished with dead insects and forest debris, but at least we didn’t acquire any communicable diseases from it. The Wi-Fi signal is erratic, slow, and for some bizarre reason the hosts like to turn it off if they see you using your phone during dinner, it happened to us twice in fact. They have a ‘jungle walk’ at the bottom of the garden which is to be frank, pathetic. The food was acceptable, nothing special at all, and ranged from quite nice (chicken in coconut) to quite unpleasant – I mean who bakes spaghetti?? In terms of value for money, well, where do I start! We felt like prices for trips were made up out of thin air, our hosts didn’t know the prices of things or refused to tell us the how much things in advance of booking until the departure bill arrived, and we felt thoroughly ripped off. As a self-proclaimed ‘Howler Monkey Resort” there is nothing, and I do mean nothing on site that has any connection to monkeys other than the sign. Yes, you can hear monkeys, as you can almost anywhere in rural central America, but its disingenuous to describe the place as a ‘Howler Monkey Resort’. This left our monkey loving kids expecting more, and sorely disappointed as this was once of the attractions of booking there.
Let’s move to the location – there is nothing whatsoever to do at the ‘resort’ or the local area, and everything of interest is at least an hour’s drive away – apart from the airport, which is probably the place you want to stay if considering coming here. With the benefit of hindsight we should have stayed nearer Belize City in somewhere nice and travelled shorter distances to the activities from there each day. The 3 activities we did were cave tubing, the Belize zoo, and the river boat trip to Lamani. The activities were all enjoyable, but we did seriously question the value for money of the activity operators the resort booked us with – they appeared to be the lower end quality operators, but charging high prices. It left us wondering if there was some form of ‘kickback’ was being passed from the operator back to the resort at our expense. The body language of the son and the river trip proprietor when we were stung for USD$160 certainly suggested something was going on.
To conclude, I’d avoid this place completely.response / report this review -

Great little "out of the way" place, run by a great family. The meals are homemade, fresh made juices, and all amazing! You can coordinate to do anything else in Belize from here, also.
