Beautiful Hotel, Fantastic Service, Excellent Food.
Without a doubt, the Zhiwa-Ling Heritage was the best hotel at which we stayed during our entire trip to Bhutan. The location is beautiful; the architecture of the hotel is spectacular; the staff are well-trained and very hospitable; and the rooms are (with minor exceptions, noted below) quite nice.
Staffing and Check-in Process. The staff members at the front desk are friendly, professional, and welcoming. The check-in process is quite efficient. Each and every member of the staff was helpful and responsive.
Lobby. The lobby is spacious and stunning, with carved-wood columns and railings that span upward in the large atrium. The chairs and lounges reflect traditional design and are quite comfortable. Wifi service in all of the hotels we stayed in during our Bhutan trip was spotty in the rooms, meaning that the lobby nearly always had a strong signal. Being in the Zhiwa-Ling lobby, though, was a very pleasant experience, so it made the lack of wifi signal in our room much more tolerable.
Hotel Grounds. In addition to the main building, there are several separate buildings that are connected by lovely walkways and bridges over pools of water. The grounds are well-maintained, but I would have preferred a bit more lighting around the outdoor walkways and stairs, to help guests navigate a night (I learned to bring a small flashlight along to dinner).
Hotel Rooms. The rooms are spacious, with comfortable beds, and a sitting area. The furniture is well-designed, and the décor is warm and inviting. Our biggest issue was having adequate and accessible electrical outlets – a problem that many hotels around the world seem to have. There was one outlet behind the night table between the two beds, but it did not work at all. The electrical outlet on the other side of each bed was devoted to the lamp. So, we had to take the multi-plug electrical cord from the coffee/tea maker to use beside the desk. I went to the front desk, and they quickly provided a second multi-plug extension cord for the room. However, the plug did not fit the outlet beside the second bed, so we had to “string together” the two extension cords to provide power for our electronics. We came up with a workaround solution, but hotels should install ample and easily accessible electrical outlets, given the profusion of electronics that travelers now use. If having a strong in-room wifi signal is important to you, ask for a room in the main building; but realize that those rooms are not as large as the ones in the outer buildings.
Food and Beverages. Breakfast is included in most room rates, and the buffet selection at is wide, varied, and ample. There are both local and Western items available for breakfast. Dinner is ordered off a prix-fixe menu, with three choices for starters, main courses, and desserts. The chef and kitchen staff provide variety of choices each evening, with a mixture of local and international dishes. On the first night, for example, I had delicious lamb chops that were paired with wild rice and a Bhutanese-influenced sauce. I had a very chocolate and smooth pot de crème for dessert. In fact, the meals at the Zhiwa-Ling were the best hotel food we had in all of Bhutan.
Spa. Unfortunately, I did not have the foresight that my traveling companions did, so the spa was fully booked when I returned from the rigorous Tiger’s Nest hike. Be sure to book the type of spa service you’d like prior to your Tiger’s Nest visit! People from my tour who did make reservations thought the spa services (massage and hot stone tub soak) were terrific.
Overall. The Zhiwa-Ling Heritage is a magnificent hotel, perfect for enjoying Paro and the Tiger’s Nest Monastery hike. Only after my stay did I discover that the Zhiwa-Ling is on National Geographic’s “Unique Lodges of the World” list, and I must say that I fully agree. What a beautiful garden and quaint cottages.. waterfalls and a stream of water flowing around.. wonderfully relaxing stay.. the chef serves excellent food..b
