Changangkha Lhakhang is one of the oldest in Thimphu, built in the 12th century. The site was chosen by Lam Phajo Drugom Zhipo. After the death of his son Nyima, his descendants took care of the monastery. Its silhouette, perched high on a spur, is a landmark of Thimphu. The monastery houses Chenrizig (Avolokitesawara), an 11-headed, thousand-armed manifestation as the central statue. The prayer books in this monastery are larger than the usual Buddhist texts. There are large prayer wheels inside the monastery and small wheels on the walls outside the monastery. The main guardian deity is named Dom-Tshang.

Tourists are not allowed inside the temple without a permit, but one can sit next to the prayer flag and enjoy a good vista over the Thimphu Valley. (Source: ABTO)

This buddha temple is located on top of a hill and offers a spectacular view of thimphu city. There are stairs from the base of the hill to the top of the temple and I would recommend taking those in order to get a proper view of the city. There are benches in front of the temple where one can sit in the evening and enjoy the pollution free air there.
The temple itself is a classical example of the architecture that I witnessed throughout my trip to Bhutan.
Highly recommended place definitely worth visiting, preferably by foot.

This popular temple, perched like a fortress on a ridge above central Thimphu, hums with pilgrim activity. It was established in the 12th century on a site chosen by Lama Phajo Drukgom Shigpo, who came from Ralung in Tibet. Parents traditionally come here to get auspicious names for their newborns or blessings for their young children from the protector deity Tamdrin (to the left in the grilled inner sanctum). Children are blessed by a phurba (ritual dagger) and given a sacred thread.

Beautiful monastery perfectly located overlooking Thimphu. Take a walk up the hill, circumnavigate, spinning the prayer wheels near sunset, the views are amazing. The monastery looks great lit up at night too.
