We booked the red hot fares and got a great deal! Our day voyage was manageable without a cabin, but we knew we wanted one for the night time. Unfortunately they were all sold out when we bought the tickets, and so we asked to be put on the waiting list. Best decision ever! Our cabin was small, but it had a very large window and an en suite. After dropping off our carry on suitcases in the cabin (there's only room under the beds!) we headed for dinner at the Tasmanian Market Kitchen. It's self serve for $24.99 a plate and the food was fantastic! No over cooked vegetables here!
I would definitely recommend a trip over to Tassie on the Spirit. The staff are absolute legends, working so hard and they always have a smile on their faces! Shout out to the Chef that gave me the best piece of roast lamb!
The only difficulty experienced was the terrible weather in the night trip from Devonport to Melbourne. Even though the beds were comfortable, it was really hard to sleep with the rough waves and lightening. Perhaps I would recommend making the night journey from Melbourne to Devonport, when you can fall asleep while still in the calmer waters of Port Phillip Bay, and then making a return day journey from Devonport to Melbourne.

Lengthy and started 10 minutes early and arrive over an hour late. Super slow. No need to buy a cabin, plenty of seats. Just plain boring really, not much to do, food is shite and the customer service even worse. Flying is the better option of the two by far.

Our crossing to Devonport and back from Melbourne exceeded our expectations. The Ferry is spacious, super comfortable, and the food was better than we would have ever expected. We booked a deluxe queen cabin and could not have been more comfortable. The bed was possibly the best on our two weeks away and the shower was brilliant. Bathrobes and toiletries were a welcome extra touch. Couldn't rate our experience more highly.

The service, food and hospitality were great. The room was great. Bunk beds are a bit dangerous as I fell out of the top bunk. The lifts could be painted. We loved our night sailing and look forward to to sailing again with you again.

It's too very difficult to access the top deck if your overweight or tall The company should check with customers before allocating beds There are some citizen that cannot access the top of the deck they should have a priority with that But their opinion is either ask to the roomate if they were ok to swap or else you can go to the recliner on the topWe paid for the cabin not a recliner.

Just about the ferry and not about the port, if you think you're getting a deal by booking the ferry so you can take a wheelchair and shower chair for a disabled person think again. The boat is not easy to navigate with doors, steps and once you're on board for 12 hours night time sailing and 9.5 hours day time sailing unless you're going to take your own food the expense is pretty high. Maybe okay if you're going locally but if you drive down to Hobart from Devonport you have to factor in at least a 3.25 hour trip the other end after a night time sailing. and same on the return trip, get up at 2.:45 and leave at 3.45am for a day time sailing from Hobart. Next time i'll fly.

Pathetic customer service, pricy and a horrible ferry service.

I was the last person to leave my dorm on the Spirit of Tasmania and accidentally left a pair of boots under the bed - as soon as I got off I realised I'd forgotten them so went to the customer service desk at Devonport. I was told they couldn't help me and that I had to call the customer service line - I'd literally just gotten off the boat and people were still on it but I wasn't allowed to go back and get a simple item or get a staff member to do so for me. I called the customer service line and they said I'd have to wait 48 hours for a lost property report and the cleaners to check the room for me. Why on earth could I not grab them while I was still there? 48 hours for someone to quickly look under a dorm bed? They never found the boots either, I had to ring up twice and each time they told me the report hadn't been completed and that they "probably hadn't been found". Useless.

Seeming as The Spirit is the only way to get your car over to Tasmania, it is a popular service. So why on earth is it $600 per person for a return fare with one tiny hatchback car and a SHARED dorm cabin? I can't imagine how much a private cabin is. No wonder so many poor souls choose the infamous recliner transit option (which I've heard is shocking).

All on-board food restaurants are extremely overpriced. The on-tap beers are the only up side, with a midi being from $6-10 each - not too bad when everything else has a hiked-up price. Movie tickets are $10 per person and the "cinema" is a pathetically small cinema screen with a dozen or so fabric seats.

Cabins are well maintained, but by god if you really want to get a vehicle to Tasmania buy a plane ticket and just rent a car or camper, there's plenty of options and choice for both - and it'll save you time and money.

Horrible. We booked the recliners on the way over, a night sail. They are advertised a a nice, cheap and comfortable way to sail. Worst night of my life. We and half the other people who booked them slept on the FLOOR. They have cameras watching people tossing and turning sleeping on the floor all night. Someone took our assigned seats. It was all in all a horrid experience. Not that Spirit really cares I think.
At 5 am as soon as we thought we could stop trying to sleep and get up off the stinky, hard floor(still better than those recliners). We ventured around the ship and noticed people sleeping anywhere they could. Smartest guy I'd ever seen was tucked away in the soft, dark kids play area. I was jealous of that guy. Suddenly everything starts to look like a bed after the night we had, had.
To anyone that goes on this ferry my advice is either fork out the crazy amount they want for a cabin or just do not get on this retched ship. Fly and hire a car or camper. I promise you'll enjoy it more.
On our journey home we forked out that crazy amount for a cabin even though it was a day sail and glad we did as it was so busy on board. People lounged anywhere they can just to get a little comfort.
Spirit of Tasmania was a horrible experience, you can definitely see that it's PUBLIC TRANSPORT!!
I will drive my car across the ocean floor if I want to take it to Tasmania next time.
