I've been to many Base Backpackers throughout New Zealand and Australia, and I've got to say this is the best Base hostel I have ever been to! The vibe is great and staff are so friendly - if you're ever down they'll help drag you out of your room (and get you flipping drunk haha) and if you're ever stuck for something to do then they have a whole host of activities and know of things to do either in St Kilda or in the city centre. Rosie on the Travel desk is a minefield of information, so friendly and helpful and is always happy to help you out with trips to go on and where's best to go in the country, and if you're after a job then Sophie on the Jobsearch desk is fantastic! If she can cope with my job hunt stress for the last five weeks then she can handle anyone. Big shout outs also go to Stuart, Vanessa, and the rest of the reception and promo staff, you guys are the best!!
Good hostel in quite a good location. Very friendly and helpful staff. Luckily we hot a free Upgrade to a private room, so I can't say anything about the dorms but our private room on the second floor was alright ans a lot quieter than anything on the first floor due to the increased distance to the bar, which is nice too albeit a bit expensive outside of happy hours. Would definitely recommend but do keep in mind that it can get a bit noisy on the first floor.
All round good vibe, colourful people, cool rooms, comfy beds, convenient location for public transport and not too far from the beach. Totally recommend for solo or group travelers.
Best backpackers in Melbourne i think.
Maybe the best I've ever been
The reception staff was very friendly however I can't get over the fact the rooms were very dirty and looked dated. Couldn't understand why one the cleaning staff got into the room at 10:00 in the morning, without saying at least a "good morning" and quickly vacuumed the room. We have booked the whole room for 2 nights to have exactly more privacy and sleeping time. To my surprise at night I found 2 people sleeping in my bed. A mistake from reception which was quickly amended. Bar staff was great and the drinks are cheap but my overall experience was below average.
If you like 18-30's holidays then this is the place for you. Lots of young drunks. And very noisy at night.
All but one thing was great. But this one thing is a deal breaker, especially for a brand like Base. The kitchen was bad. Really, bad. Most good hostels figure out a way to keep the kitchen presentable throughout the day, but not this one. When I went down to cook dinner, the three sinks were full with disgusting water and dishes. The sponges were of low quality to begin with, but were left out to so long they could no longer be used to clean dishes. The soap was missing from one of the dispensers. Anytime I ate, I had to wash everything I used before using it because I didn't trust it (I got sick the second day I was there, I think from not washing before I used). By the way, my standards aren't super high. Medium High.
Nice rooms, all with aircon and en suite bathrooms. Really nice building with a very modern look, doesn't feel run down at all like a lot other hostels. Located in a really nice area with a close tram station to the centre of Melbourne.
Great location, good rooms and facilities, bar, games and kitchen. Kitchen is a little on the small side and if you genuinely need to sleep then ear plugs are needed, as it gets very loud. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable.
Usually avoid hostels/backpackers like the plague but was short on cash and booked Base. Nice rooms, great service, in a very nice area and safe. I really enjoyed my time here and I recommend it!
+ Cheap, stylish and nice rooms!
- Was on the top floor so can't say much about how loud the music would be from the bar for lower rooms, it personally wasn't an issue where I was.
