We visited this place without reservations - it was quite busy but not too packed on a Sunday Evening. We went straight for the main course. As we waited for the food we were served the best bread, butter and beef sausage curry I have eaten ever!! The bread was so fresh and yummy. The main course was delicious with large portions We paired our food with one of the house merlots - it was a really good wine. The prices are on the higher end but it was well worth it - the food is great, the service is top notch, the portions are massive and the ambiance is divine. I would definitely recommend a visit.

Heritage steak restaurant with original colonial vibes. We were disappointed by the service & our steak order came out wrong with medium vs. rare, but still had a great dinner. Good spot for tourists & visitors. Don’t miss the deli section. Not gentle on the wallet.

Best steak you'll ever eat! Great service, mouthwatering food. Quite pricey, but on the same level as most of the surrounding restaurants in the square. Probably a good idea to reserve a table, because it gets really busy. Very popular with the business crowd. They also have their own wine cellar with an extensive selection. Go have a look!

Having asked for rare, the fillet steak looked great at first, as you can see in the picture. But as I soon found out, the piece was still cold. After sending it back, it came back reheated, but still cold. Third time I suggested cooking it medium rare, to ensure good temperature throughout. I got a new cut, which also arrived cold.
The manager then told me that rare and medium rare cuts can sometimes be served cold
Finally changed my order to a sirloin steak, which was good, but meanwhile the rest of my family had finished their plates.
Our waiter was great, but management and chefs were absolutely terrible. Their attitude only made it worst.
I do not recommend this restaurant to anybody.

Fantastic food, the variety of meet available is impressive. One of the free place in Johannesburg where you get a sirloin on the bone (tomahawk). The service could use a little improvement as good service is dependent on the waiter you get. Thee wine cellar is excellent with a wide range of exclusive wines from the wine makers guild. The prices are high so it's tailored for those with deep pockets.

Fantastic meat, delicious desserts, very attentive service, good location and fantastic wine. Why not 5*? Meat (cooked medium rare) was a bit smokey and restauant is huge and I got a place in the back (where ai hoped for a table close to Mandela square). Other than that, excellent place, always worth a dinner!

Lovely starters with bread and wors bites. Good tasty food. Lovely ambience and you can see it's a favourite amongst the diners.
1st time I tried mussels ever..
Order a rib eye steak I'm waiters recommendation.

In my personal opinion fillet is tastier.
The price tho is a bit much R260 for a steak

Had ribeye medium rare for dinner. Would definitely recommend visiting to experience South African steaks.

Pros: ribeye was delicious and I would recommend getting medium rare as they do tend to cook it slightly more than requested. Also South African steaks seem to be leaner so medium rare is definitely the way to go. Service was great and view is also great.

Cons: relatively higher in price but the location calls for it.

Had a good dining experience, pretty decent steak. Loved the concept of seeing the meat cuts in the display cabinet before ordering and the wine cellar etc.

Not recommended at all. First visit for our 1 year wedding anniversary. The restaurant itself is quite nice but very disappointed with their food. Definitely not worth the money. My husband ordered fried squid heads which came in a very tiny portion and was tasteless. I ordered pulled pork tacos, the meat was dry with almost no flavour and the taco was filled with lettuce with just a thin layer of meat on top. this place is crazy expensive with our bill adding up to over R600.

This place is Brilliant. Staff and friendly and service is good. They start you off with complementary bread and wors which is very tasty. The starters portions are quite big. The fillet steak is very tender and quality of the meat is good. You can even chose your own cut of meat from the butcher. Very nice atmosphere and good ambience. Overall great food and good service.

First visit to The Butcher Shop and the food was divine. If it was recommended, we devoured it! Our group booking was easily catered for. You can choose your own cut of meat and cooked to your liking but we trusted our recommendation from wait staff and we were certainly not disappointed. Will be back for The Butcher Shop experience!

There is a train station nearby but also an easy Uber/taxi back to hotel.

Stakes are good but the price is higher than other good brands in JHB.
If you come with a toddler or a baby; you are not warmly welcomed.

Had a fantastic, perfectly cooked, and very expensive 400g waygu ribeye served with some nice whole grain mustard (this is the only place I've seen serve it this way). Wait staff is friendly and attentive but not very knowledgeable about the house wines.

Very tender filet steak. Cooked perfectly medium rare as ordered. Also the mousse au chocolat can be recommended as a dessert. The staff was very friendly, and we can't share the bad experiences others have had.

I have dined here twice before. Both visits have been highly disappointing considering the standard of food in South Africa, and the cost of a meal at the restaurant. Although I must admit the side dishes, drinks and basic customer service is good, where the shop is supposed to be strong (with their steaks) I have been really let down.

I normally order a 500 gram sirloin cut from a non fatty section, or at least a piece that the fat will be on the edge so I can have my steak blue. When I ask for blue I believed I was asking for a steak that that is at room temperature, but seared very quickly at a very hot temperature on all edges, as this is normally what I receive anywhere in the world (and elsewhere in South Africa) when I order a blue steak.

On my first visit half of my steak was cooked reasonably rare, but it definitely could not have been called blue, the other half was so well cooked through it almost represented a broiled steak, it was grey from edge to edge. The outside was grey with a couple grill marks on it. My work colleagues on the night had enjoyable meals and I assumed it was a one off and ignored it.

This time (13th Feb 2017) I made it very clear to my waitress I wanted a blue steak, that it must be uncooked in the middle, but seared at a very high temperature on the outside, she assured me the staff would know exactly what I meant by that. Once again I got a rare steak, not blue as ordered when it arrived on the table, it was cooked lightly on the outside in a similar fashion to the first time making me assume the chef did not have the grill hot enough before trying to cook the meat, and therefore having to leave it on for too long to seal the outside.

Considering the meal and drinks for four people came to R2000 including tip, I was highly disappointed. Not in an effort to dodge the bill, I explained to of the wait staff how disappointed I was with my steak but no one bothered to offer to bring the manager so I could talk to them about it further?

In comparison I recently took four of my work colleagues to The Wombles in Bryanston for steak and got THE BEST service and meat I have ever received in my life. The steak I asked for was approximately 900 grams, but had not a slither of fat inside, only along the outside, it was perfectly cooked with a dark seared outside and inside was blue at a perfect room temperature. This meal came to a similar price.
