Got your scarf, second-hand knitted jersey, flee market hat, high top socks, disdain for everything normative, and your lack of all social awareness social awareness ready? Good. Because the Bioscope is having a show this Wednesday.
Pretty nice novelty idea, showing old and under-shown movies in a makeshift theater at a very reasonable price. However, the screen quality of the cinema isn't the greatest, sometimes ruining the experience.response / report this review -

Didn't have the movie we wanted to watch. Only told us after we had bought food and drinks. Gave us a refund but still we had spent money on drinks and stuff always love the bioscope otherwise.

The bioscope is set in the maboneng precinct. Friendly service of freshly baked pizza and coffee. Chose to see Loving Vincent over a weekend that was fully booked. Due to technical problems we were unable to see the movie. It is an independent establishments that survives on your patronage. Some patrons chose to collect refunds for the tickets. I would think the correct thing to do is not to take the refund as the staff tried their best. I would regard this as a tip to the staff. Wishing the staff every success.

Located in Maboneng. Nice vibe and a different viewing experience on recycled car seats :) but the room isn't sound proof and they keep opening the doors while the movie is showing. It's clean.

It's a super cool place with great pizza, service and decor. Just getting to it you have to drive through urban areas so parking is not so great so I would highly recommend taking a uber there. But overall a great experience.

Besides the awesome independent and arthouse films they regularly show here (which you will not get to see at any other cinema in Johannesburg), they also offer the option of renting out the cinema for private screenings, which makes for a great corporate or fun event.
The pizzas they serve next door are simply amazing too!response / report this review -

A unique experience. Small intimate theater. Drinks and food to your chair. Great way to spend an evening. Cons: Bathrooms are a hike away. Crowd can sometimes be a bit noisy. But it's all about the film, stuff you won't see Ster Metro.

This is a lovely independent cinema in the heart of the Maboneng district. An institution, this cinema is popular and screens an incredible range of films and documentaries, with support for local independent films and filmmakers, it hosts many film festivals and screens internationally relevant movies. There is a culture of great film at this cinema. They also have fun events like their annual Valentines day screening, their Noodle Box Cinema where old favourites and double features are offered, and they have hosted many special art film events and launches.

Always showing very interesting indie movies or documentaries. Great alternative to going to the movies, as you can order food whilst you watch.

Very cosy movie theatre that screens interesting local and international art films and documentaries. Nice food and beer selection as well.
