South Africa's 3rd largest and probably one of the most photogenic due to its clear water, this reflecting the sky in all the colours of blue your can imagine. World famous for catching yellow fish on fly. Accommodation is a little tatty but the day the are refurbishing. Also a camp site but beware, the wind can really blow here, knock your tent pegs in well. The Phatt Chef Roadside Diner B&B is on the dam and is probably your best bet for accommodation and meals.

It's a nice place to visit but not so safe. A woman with her sons drowned there. The following day 2 guys drowned there while swimming. It was heartbreaking!!!

Somewhat of a letdown. No rubbish bins, the light at the camp site was not working. There are no cold water taps in the showers so you burn yourself if you try to shower.
    Nice views though.

One of South Africa's prettiest dams, sparkling blue with world class yellow fishing on fly. The accommodation is in desperate need of refurbishment, as are the camping abolition blocks, but I'm told that this is planned for 2018. There are, however, plenty of accommodation options near the dam, best of which is probably the Phatt Chef Roadside Diner and B&B. No food or drink options at the dam, as all accommodation is self catering or camping, so come well prepared. There is a convenience store but it's pretty basic, otherwise there is s good restaurant at Phatt Chef Roadside Diner, and a slight better food supply ship at Little Switzerland hotel.

Nice pit stop. Good place to see birds and mongooses. Make sure and count your change. Driving trails but no walking trails and no map provided.

Sterkfontein dam is a beautiful, deep, clear and clean dam with an incredible setting in the Drakensburg mountains. The nature reserve itself is badly managed and is not maintained, ablutions in the campsite area are horrendous and the chalets, while very nice are generally not available because the staff don't want to clean them. Aside from that, the dam iself is great for various boating activities, fishing and exploring. It is over 100m deep in places and because of its clarity, is one of the best freshwater diving places in South Africa.

Great resort with chalets. Excellent roads and good visibility of animals in the surrounding game reserve. It's right on the edge of the Sterkfontein dam.
