Very good service. The beds and rooms are great. The best thing of the stay is the WiFi is fast and the hotel is close to all the shops. Best hotel been at in a long time.

Excellent location. Rooms are clean, neat and spaciuos. Enough restaurants in walking distance to grab a bite to eat from. Beach is in walking distance, but be warned it is downhill so the trek back can get tiring. Will definitely come back here.

Beautiful hotel on entering with safe undercover parking.

Really a very basic hotel. We spent one night here. No water in rooms - empty fridge - just the basic toiletries- not even a shower cap.

Breakfast was good and delish.

We had been travelling for long hours on the road to a funeral and went to this hotel to ask to use their rest rooms early hours of the morning. The manager Harrish on duty refused point blank to allow my wife and daughter to use the toilet. I was disgusted that 2 woman where turned away by him, even after she explained that she is a pro-card member. He was unable to judge and make an exception ,he just turned them away, not considering, they where woman at that late our that had an emergency. I think he could have been more humain and even asked the security to escort them to the ladies if he had reservations about them. Not just turn them away like thrash. I felt really insulted and felt like we as loyal customers to the Protea have no respect or even just compassion as a human towards another human in a desperate situation. A manager should be able to assess a situation and make a decision in an emergency, thats why he is a manager in place.

A window with a picture laminated on it, when you open the window a white painted ally wall. Great view! On the other side of the room right outside a parking lot. Really? A non smoking room with an indoor parking lot on your front door step. Certainly the most impressive of all, no hotel restaurant and no room service. You are going out for dinner, whether you want to go or notbut then there is the self catering to look forward toosee me never again

The Protea Umhlanga is located five minutes up the hill from the beach and the Umhlanga pier that I just fell in LOVE with last year. My room had a view of the pier from the window. My only complaint about the hotel was the construction going on nearby so my window was really dirty, but in spite of ALL the dirt it was still a LOVELY view. I was in the new tower of the hotel which has nice decor. Although I initially picked this hotel because the rooms had kitchenettes. I got there and found out those are in the old tower only, but my room did at least have a refrigerator. The staff was GREAT! I was met with a smile from everyone. The management team was lovely. They helped me with my tour plan to the mini safari and Zulu dancing. They made sure I was aware that there was 24 hour security in the area that everyone shares so they told me I would be safe walking around. All of the hot restaurants in the area were within a one block radius of the hotel so I had plenty of food options. Pick N Pay is across the street so groceries were also easily accessible. I would definitely stay at this hotel again.

Cigarette smoking in the rooms flows out into hallway and makes the place stink.and this is a no smoking floor! Internet is very poor quality, frequently cuts off making it impossible to work. The limit of 500mb is a been a problem and must be reset everyday. Staff is very friendly but do not handle their smoking problems. Housekeeping does a nice job. Perfect location.

HOW THE HELL DOES A COMPANY LIKE PROTEA/MARIOTT NOT HAVE SYSTEMS IN PLACE TO PREVENT DOUBLE BOOKINGS!!!

At 4am a bunch of drunk unruly government employees were banging at my door because the umhlanga rocks hotel has double booked room 610. They have an active card that is allowing access to the room but fortunately I had the door latched. When I called reception they spoke back to me in Zulu and said they can't hear me! The bunch made noise in the passage way until well after 6am with no intervention from the staff at Protea Hotel umhlanga rocks.

This is the second time in less than a week. This also occurred at Protea Midrand on 20 February 2017 when my company booked me in for work.

I will never be using a Protea Hotel again and will advise my company to never book me in a Protea again!

The new wing is aesthetically pleasing however I find the room a bit cramped compared to the rooms in the old wing. However, the service at reception has improved tremendously providing a very warm and welcomed feeling when checking in. The reception and dining area is also beautifully done up and the different use of space and levels gives the hotel foyer a different edge.
