As a local, i consider this market a tourist trap. Many years ago, this was a vibrant market with hundreds of very diverse stalls. Now unfortunately, it is a hundred stalls selling the same mass produced african curios which, ( barring one or two real producers) are probably make in factories in China.
I visit here to walk on the ancient cobblestones and to visit the bookseller who deals in classics and esoteric books. He is the only trader who has remained from the 1980's.
I imagine that tourists can find guided tours from here. They can also be molested if not wide awake.

Good place to buy artistic and traditional souvenirs and also one can find many items of interest. Prices are not fixed. So, study the prices in at least 3-4 vendors. Bargaining seems to be the practice here. One can pick up a few items quickly. In addition to street vendors, there are permanent shops also.

Bustling market in the historic heart of the city. Interesting and lively place that is well worth a visit. However there is room for improvement.
The vendors can be pushy and the choice of things on sale is largely limited to African style tourist knickknacks of varying quality. It is a safe place but there are the occasional pick-pockets so it is always good to be aware. Also could be cleaner but by and large the CCID does a decent job of cleaning it up at the end of the day. Avoid the public bathroom there, it is a bit stinky. Overall it is a historic place well worth a visit but that is not living up to its enormous potential.

Lively market with locals selling mostly African art, clothing, bags, caps etc. Just ensure you stay aware of your surroundings and belongings. Couple of nice places around the market where you could have a coffee or beer. Interesting architecture of buildings around for those who likes history.

Great spot for the best deals on all sorts of souvenirs. Haggling is a must. Be cautious of your personal items, as it's tight quarters and crowded. Vendors very friendly. It seemed to be cash only. Lots of fun restaurants in the surrounding area

Mostly a tourist trap, with mass produced curios. They do have some nice benches on the side, where I like to sit and people watch. CCID is making an effort to clean up the area.

Good place to buy gifts from Africa. Look around in everything place and compare Prices. In each shop they give you always highest prices, do you should así for discount. Only cash and be aware of your Stuff. Pick pocket are there.

Very lively place with the market daytime. There are nice small restaurants and coffee shop around the square. The meeting place for lots of people. Here you cant get African art and African items for sale. A must visit when in Cape Town.

Curio market is more appropriate description. With a seedy edge. Miss the old days when it was a real flea market. There are one or two cool stalls still where one can buy unique jewellery or second hand cd's. Always try and haggle the price.

All the things. All the vendors. They will negotiate prices, and most vendors are extremely friendly, and kind. I love the colors!! Truly all kinds of little souvenirs to bring home for your friends. The 30 or 40 Rands bracelets were a hit with my crowd

The vendors are hardworking dedicated people, with beautiful and inspiring stories to share.
You'll get all kinds of arts and crafts.
It's also just a beautiful area to chill at, there's benches provided on the side of the market.

Traditionally a great square in the middle of Old Cape Town that runs as a market. Sadly most of the stalls are selling African art, and try to rip every tourist off. It is possible to negotiate prices down to a quarter of the original price, so be aware.

When I first went to Greenmarket Square was during the opening concert to the International Jazz festival and it was exquisite, beautiful and absolutely fun. Beautiful music and we had a great time

If you are looking for tourist type curios then this area of town is where you want to be (and the next road up on Long street too). Be sure to keep your bags zipped up and never flash your valuables (anywhere in any big city in Africa) though. Prices are highly negotiable. Don't be shy. If you offer too low a price the hawker will not accept. If they accept then it is because they are still making a profit. Sotake a shot and try your hand at negotiating. Oh, and their is now a Burger King on the corner among the classy cafe's.
