Ranger came to wake us up at 8am to tell us we needed to register. We had called the night before, we were going to arrive late due to our brakes needing unexpected service. We were told we could find an unreserved site and register once we were up and around in the morning. If you're THAT concerned why don't you have a self registration system like EVERYWHERE ELSE?! I've been to a lot of state parks and WILL NOT be returning to this one.

There are so many things to love about Wilderness! Miles of pristine remote shoreline, both sandy and rocky. We spent hours meandering the shore, rock hunting and swimming at what felt like our own private beach. The sunsets and dunes of Sturgeon Bay are incredible! We camped at the new rustic tent campground. Our site, CC, had a phenomenal view of the Lake. We could walk from our site to the shore in a minute. The tent sites are situated for privacy between sites with mature trees and brush. The down side; the main road in the park runs right next to the campground, so we could hear a lot of traffic. Also, the ranger station/check in was right by our site. All in all, a great place to explore and camp!

The name says it all. Wilderness, lots of it. Has rustic tent site to modern full hook up sites. Cabins are available. Great trails and beaches. Such a beautiful peaceful campground. I luv it here and its about 8 miles from Mackinaw City.

We LOVE Wilderness State Park. We have camped there three times. They offer brand new "rustic/walk in" sites. The walk in is not far and it gives the camper an AMAZING view of the water with a short walk to your own "private" waterfront. There is no electric at these sites but it's totally worth it. Wilderness is a great place whether you choose to tent camp or RV camp. A quick 30 minutes from Mackinaw City/Bridge, and about 15 min drive to Headlands (dark sky park). I recommend if you are interested in Wilderness, book far ahead, spots book fast!

Most campsites are full hookup, and trailers and tents are packed in close together without privacy. We heard that walk in sites are more private and nice but there are only a few and all were booked.

Beach by campsites is only a few feet wide from grass to water (lake level really high this year) but stretches for miles and is soft and sandy. Incredibly beautiful.

A 4 mile drive ( or lovely bike ride ) to west from campsites was a beach that was very secluded . Only one other party besides ours on a day that campsites were fully booked. (This beach is a bit more rocky but still pleasantly sandy.)

Good for swimming, kayaking, biking, traveling to Mackinac Island ferry for a day trip, more.

What a gem of a park. We camped in one of the new tent sites- incredible: on the water, surrounded by pines and private. Nice ranger- naturalist gave interesting flower walk. Only downside was the bugs which hatch in waves.

Great nature feel, beautiful views of Lake Michigan and the upper peninsula, and good camping facilities. Could use some improvements to the common restrooms, but that's nothing a camper isn't used to. Nice hiking trails, if a little flat, and Mackinaw city and the bridge are a short drive away.

Very nice sites with great views of Lake Michigan. There is apparently very little light pollution because I don't think I have ever seen so many stars at night.

When planning your visit, be careful to recognize that the bathroom/showers might not yet be open yet. Early in the season they only have vault toilets.

If you are looking for a remote park with amazing views and a variety of wilderness adventures, this is the place. The massive park has more than 250 campsites in three different campgrounds. I stayed at the Lakeshore Campground, which is right on the big lake with incredible views and nice size lots. The park also offers rustic cabins that can be accessed via a two track dirt road that extends into the peninsula between Sturgeon Bay and the Straits. Each cabin sits on several acres near the water. Make your reservation for these cabins six months in advance, as they sell out quickly. A boat launch is available to start your fishing and boating adventure. There are playground areas around the campgrounds for the kids. Wildlife abounds in this remote wilderness, so be sure to take measures to protect your food and belongings while camping or dining. There is a small camp store, but the nearest town or dining opportunity is more than 15 miles away.

Amazing park. Huge in size with a ton of lake Michigan coast line. Good views of the bridge which looks neat at night. There are several cabins for rent in the far end of the park which to me is the real high light. They are down a small dirt road and very spaced out. Surrounded by forest and only a few yards from the beach The Wagoshaunce cabin was awesome! It was huge with enough beds for 8 people. Hand water pump right outside. We spent a day walking around the point and it was beautiful. There were a couple lagoons with lots of wildlife. Loved our stay and highly recommend.
