Three stars because some essential things were missing.

The gnocchi and Brussels were A M A Z I N G, but the popcorn (which came in a TINY dish and was $9, was absolutely terrible and hard to finish. It was way too smoky and they touted it as having bacon in it, but the only bacon I tasted was artificial af. It was gross.

The service was slow and snobby. The host & hostess were very nice, but my actual server was very unfriendly and rarely checked in on me. I’ve worked in food service and I think it’s safe to hold folks to a higher standard than that. They said I’d wait 30 mins “max” and I waited for about an hour (as a party of one, mind you).

As I said, the main courses I had were excellent, and my dessert was truly a work of art. Incredible flavors. I had the strawberry ricotta crisp thing and it was WILD. Maybe the service was bad because it was a busy night? Or I was being annoying? Who knows, but I expected more out of such a highly reviewed restaurant. I wouldn’t go back (even though the things they did well they did REALLY well).

In my opinion, the best restaurant west of La Brea in all of L.A. - every item in the "small plates" and "vegetables" section is memorable. Places like Gjelina have similar dishes but the quality is not as high. You cannot go wrong with anything on the menu - this is one of my personal favorite restaurants anywhere and you will NOT be disappointed that you went. Oxtail dumplings, chicken liver, cauliflower, English peas, are all out of this world.

Simple and brilliant - cauliflower with honey, shaved ricotta, and lavender, for instance: you could do it at home, but would never think of it - and it's spectacular. Same with English peas done in an edamame style, with sea salt and mint. Then there were some things I wouldn't try at home, like lamb belts with chutney and coriander. Everything just a cut above - delicious and a bit surprising. The house wine was really excellent, too.

Awesome place. Mr. Andrew chef and owner makes my family feel right at home no complaints on this side food cooked to the very specific and detail way you order. I definitely recommend you eat here... over all awesome place

Everything was delicious. We had the oxtail dumplings, short ribs, and mushrooms and everything was exceptional. But the dessert was perhaps the very best part. The strawberry pastry thing with honeycomb ice cream was out of this world - the pastry was served warm topped with perfect strawberries The place is also super cute fun. Great for romantic date or girls' night!

There are not enough good words to describe the experience at Tar & Roses but I will try - it is a full on experience by the way. The service perfect and top of their game. Cocktails and wine list are a perfect match for the food, and beautifully currated. The food is a true marvel, wonderfully localy sourced foods, creatively prepared and with a wonderful blend of tastes and beauty. By far one of my favorite Tar & Roses in Santa Monica.

Delicious small plates and cheeses. Great wine selection. Beautiful small restaurant. Only open for dinner. Best sorbet I ever had.

Hands down: favorite restaurant of all time. This place is always packed - simply for the fact it's breathtakingly amazing food. It's all fresh and sourced from the highest quality around the world. I went on my birthday and had the New Zealand Venison. The bone marrow appetizer is my favorite thing there. Don't forget to wash it down with a decadent glass of Ice Wine!
