Sterling Hot Rods did an outstanding job . They have my complete confidence. I was notified all the way thru the process ..and everything that i asked to be done they did even more . I can't wait for them to put in the LS3 in . These guys are full of creative ideas and really care about getting it done right !

The Bird Flies Again!

In 2013, I was given a family heirloom, a 1968 Firebird. The only catch was that it basically needed everything except the interior replaced. Having thrown a rod in the Nevada desert in 1992, she had been a lawn ornament for over two decades. Once in my possession, I researched and looked everywhere in and around northern Virginia for a shop that could restore her to her former glory, and make my family proud. The minute I walked in the door at Sterling Hot Rods, I knew it was the right place! Tom and his staff greeted me, answered my questions, and set a plan for getting the ol’ bird back on the road.

As soon as I brought my car in, the work began. Tom and his staff researched parts, fabricated components, and did all the leg work necessary to ensure the project would succeed. The car received a new engine, transmission, brakes, suspension, and all the other necessary components (basically everything but the interior). During the entire process, I felt that the team at Sterling Hot Rods had my best interest in mind. Tom's right hand man, Jeremy, was always keeping me up-to-date with pictures, videos, email updates, etc. I felt extremely connected during the entire process. Even when a difficulty was encountered, Tom and his staff kept me at ease and provided expert recommendations. The real cherry on top for me was the masterful job they did by customizing a fiberglass hood; they worked countless hours to fit the hood and ensure it looked perfect. It looks amazing! The rest of the car looks amazing, too, and now she is back on the road. The bird flies again!

I am extremely pleased with Tom and his staff for all of their hard work. There may be other shops in the world, but there is no shop better than Sterling Hot Rods! To the entire team - thank you so much!

Be very careful with this shop. More specifically Tom Sweeten. He is the owner of the shop. This is obviously a high end shop. Meaning they want the most they can get out of you to pay for the light bill, gas bill, staff, property, etc. You will be fooled into believing that they actually care about your dream of getting your car done right. I have lived several places in this country and no one charges the prices that are charged in Northern Virginia. The cost for work is 90-109 per hour but that depends on how they feel. The trick about charging by the hour is that they can tell you they spent as many hours as they want and you are stuck with the bill! They are extremely unreasonable, but this is due to the management of Tom Sweeten. He will say whatever just to get your car in there and then switch it up once you get your car there. I think the techs are decent but why wouldn't they be, they can just take their time and get paid. Tom caught an attitude and used foul language with me when it was brought to his attention that he quoted me a certain price to do a particular job. They advertise no job to small on Craigslist but that is clearly not the case. They are all about the mighty dollar! And to some of you extremely rich folks who are patrons of this business, that may be ok to throw away money but to me and MOST, it is NOT! Honestly Tom needs to take a business class. He is stressed on how he is going to keep his business running and it is affecting how he is treating his customers. So again I tell you to just be careful. And know you will be paying A LOT for ANYTHING you get done at this shop. And also note that they may or may not resolve the issue you bring your vehicle to them for, but at the end of the day you will be charged for what they could not fix. How professional is that? If you claim to be the best and you want to charge the most, there really shouldn't be a job you can't fix! But what do I know, I'm just they guy with the check book! You've been warned!

This is a beautiful facility and the owner Tom seems like a nice guy. I don't doubt they've done nice work on some cars, but unfortunately I came out disappointed and surprised that a "high-end" restoration shop charging over $100 per labor hour can get away with such poor quality work.

I took my 61' beetle to do some simple electric troubleshooting. After paying close to $1000 to get the turn signals working and pinpoint a couple of short to grounds, I picked up the car and noticed the new turn signal wires (which I later found out I didn't even need to run new wires) were ghetto-routed under the car (outside). I had even indicated to them the correct way of routing them, To make matters worse, a fuse blew as soon as I turned on the car to try out the repairs.

After sending feedback to the owner, he apologized, adding that he had terminated the employee who worked on my car, and told me to take the car back. At this point I really thought they would make things right, until I received an email saying the car was ready in the parking lot and that they had left the keys inside I guess they didn't want to confront me. Not what I would expect for customer service. So I picked up the car and WOW! whenever I pressed the brakes, the turn signals would come on! I couldn't believe it. This led me to inspect the wiring again and surprise surprise. the wiring was routed incorrectly AGAIN. This time it was at least protected, but just under the carpet of the car instead of through the A-pillar where there rest of the wires go to the back. At this point I decided to fix those things myself and cut my losses.

I initially thought of taking my 75 corvette there to do major restoration work, but this experience definitely made it an easy decision.

Sterling is not only one of the best classic car restoration garages in Northern VA - it is a shop run by good hard working Americans. I had my grandfathers 1969 Barracuda restored there - they did all the work except for the engine rebuild. The staff at Sterling Hot Rods worked with me at every turn making sure that I was extremely happy with my car. Their prices are fair to begin with but they had a nice discount for military and law enforcement. I can't say enough positive things about Sterling Hot Rods.
