This place is awesome. The auto tour route is simple, easy to understand and packed full of wildlife. There are trails to hike near the welcome center and a picnic area to enjoy lunch after.

This is the location of one of the great migration spectacles of the world. There could have been a million geese there that day. Be there about mid morning. That is when they fly in from area fields and settle in massive groups. Be patient. At some point they will take off and block the sun with their numbers. There are lots of good videos on YouTube but you need to see it and hear it in real life. Yes Smell it is an option.

We went to see both birds of prey and the snow geese. The day we went the count on the geese was around 550k birds!!! It was great!!!!
We stopped at the nature center and talk to a very nice person who gave us a few tips and info about the place. There is also a nice little museum there to check out.response / report this review -

We went to see the snow geese migration but was very pleasantly surprised to see much more species of birds all messed together. It was an awesome sight! I would recommend taking binoculars on your visit.

Something to see every time we visit. Accessible in all seasons to view migratory species. Driving the loop takes about 2 hours allowing for stops. Can be biked as well!

beautiful, quiet and pristine refuge. Saw lots of cool plants, birds, bugs and snakes, and the elusive Kingfisher! I watched the total eclipse here and it was the perfect setting to experience the darkness and the wildlife reaction.

We live in KC area and stop by when heading home from Omaha. We call it SQUAW CREEK. Always have, always will. We enjoy the loop drive year round (when possible). Sometimes we see thousands and sometimes just a few, but it's pretty in all seasons. During migration it is amazing to witness the huge amount of birds! Both to look at such large numbers and also to hear how loud they can all be. We highly recommend you stop by when possible.

Beautiful scenery. When we went there in February we saw thousands of snow geese and several bald eagles.

The wildlife and birds we saw were endless. Saw thousands of snow geese and many others. Much thought went into preserving this refuge.

Don't recommend going on a windy day. That was my mistake. But completely worth the drive for viewing the bald eagles. Staff in the gift shop/visitor center were completely unhelpful. That was disappointing.

One of nature’s most social and playful creatures, river otters have big personalities and even bigger appetites. Often seen in groups, they can be observed hunting and frolicking year round at Loess Bluffs National Wildlife Refuge in Missouri. In winter, you might even catch them sliding across the ice on their bellies.

Love Squaw Creek! For a photographer, there are incredible opportunities. One bone to pick--I wish the bird counts would be posted more often, especially during the migration. I realize this is an inexact science, but even a daily guestimate of snow geese and eagles or a simple no change would be a great service to those who are driving in from long distances to witness the show. We are nearing the peak of the season, and the current update is a week old. Just a suggestion.
