It's a place that you get the feeling everything on the menu is good. Get the firecracker shrimp for an appetizer. A little pricey. I was bothered by flies, which is odd inside in December. Nice view of the lake.
The food was pretty good, though they don't have much for vegetarians. I ordered a taco salad and asked if I could swap extra veggies for the meat. They added extra veggies but charged me 6.25 for it. I assumed it was a substitution for the meat and wouldn't have gotten it otherwise. So I don't recommend this place if you're a vegetarian, or if you want to swap something. That said, the service was friendly, the view is very nice and the food was pretty good. I'll probably go back but will just try to order from the menu as is.
Stopped in for lunch while out riding. Had the fish platter and it was very good. My only suggestion would be to get the small portion. It comes with soup or salad and two sides. It is a lot of food! The small will be more than enough for most people.
Disinerested waitstaff! On Saturday we were seated outside. We watched for over 15 minutes - servers walking right by us. No eye contact, nothing. This one waitress kept serving drinks one at a time to a table right next to us. In and out with one drink at a time and not even an acknowledgement we existed. We were patient because we understand the times and we rode 2 1/2 HOURS to get there! Then people get seated at a table right in front of us -- and not even a minute later a waitress comes out to take their order. WE WALKED OUT and went to restaurant next door. Train your wait staff when they see a table with not even water on it for over 5 minutes -- to say "someone will be with you shortly and report it to the hostess." Simple restaurant etiquette.
Food was good. Order was wrong, which got corrected, but that takes time. I asked for romaine instead of mixed greens for my saladwas told, when the bill arrived, that it was a $2 up-charge. That's fine, but it would have been nice to know that when I placed the order. Considering our order was wrong, it would go a long way to get at least the romaine comped.
It was a Sunday afternoon, on a beautiful, mid-70s day, and the place was barely half full. That should have told us something.
We were just passing through Monticello on our way home from vacation, and hoped to find a cool waterside restaurant that we could return to in the future. Unfortunately, this won't be it.
Good drinks, you’ll get them at the door. I waited at least an hour to get seated and never got a server, once asked for a server and got treated terribly by employees. Had a large group and walked out because of poor treatment and excuses. Wouldn’t recommend this restaurant.
Food is good. Customer service has room for improvement most of the time. My thought is if they would assign the wait staff to one area of the restaurant instead of having a table in the bar, a table in the main dining area and a table in the outside bar and dining it would be more efficient. These area are not even visible from one to the other. On my last visit the waitress appoliged 3 different times for not getting back to us in the bar area because she had 2 larger table in the dining room???
Didn't make me happy. I come in with four people and made to feel like myself and friends are chopped meat and don't matter as much as the larger tables. The food is good that is the only reason I continue to go there.
Stopped in a couple weeks ago. We pulled our boat up to the dock and had dinner on the deck. The live band was fantastic, our service was great, and the drinks were cold! Great place and great experience.
This place is nice enough. Been to it several times. Nice food, outdoor and indoor seating. Moderate priced. I keep going back thinking the service would get better. It does. But it may take fifty more times to reach a decent level. I'd The servers would just do there job and wait on people it would be better. Leave the drama of your personal lives at home. Act happy, take orders, serve them timely and don't forget that the customer experience is over till the bill paid. The time between a guest asking for the check and the time they actually get there change or card back should not equal the time it took to get the food. My wife keeps making me come back. Riverside I will be e back soon.
Our motorcycle group went there yesterday (Sunday, 8/27/2017) for a late lunch. First, we were a large group (14) and we had two different waiters working our table. The food was good, but the service left something to be desired. It took a long time to get drinks refilled and simple requests taken care of. I will say its because of the large number in our group but the waiter who was doing our side of the table didn't really seem that dedicated to quickly waiting on us. The food was good so that is a plus but I don't think I would go back with a large group again.
Bacon wrapped pork chops and filet were good though the steak was undercooked a bit.
Pork chops were very tasty and tender. Side onions and mushrooms were very good. Spicy shrimp appetizer was also very good. Baked potatoes came out nice as did the green beans and broccoli. Wife's mixed drinks were very good. However, we were over-charged on the meal and each beer came out flat. Waitress said bar tender blamed it on warm glasses. Huh? Other customer beers had a nice foam head. I asked two times about this issue. I could tell the type of glass used wasn't cleaned/rinsed well; couldn't stir up a good foam head with a clean fork. Upon leaving - as I went to get the car - the waitress asked my wife if the service was OK. After telling her the issues, he had the audacity to tell my wife her tips were typically higher. Well miss, if you owned up to the issues and didn't BS us when we asked, your tip would have been better. Observing other guests' interactions, their waitresses were much better. We got the sour apple of the group.
I travel to Monticello, from Des Moines Iowa, every few months to visit my good friends. We always go to the Sportsman for dinner. It's a lovely place. They have great food and it's a great view of the lake. A nicely varied menu
and food is always well prepared. My personal favorite is the Buffalo shoe with the firecracker sauce!
The relaxing atmosphere, the gorgeous view, our awesome server along with a superb meal is what made me give it 5 stars.
Quality food and drinks at reasonable prices with nice view of the lake.
Food is good, adult beverages are great and service is second to none.
Service good food so so, had to many problem with the food
Good food, live music on Thursday and usually weekends in the summer. Has a tiki bar and pulls in a good crowd. Can order buckets of beer too. The indoor bar is really nice as well. On the lake, and the view is amazing. Can dine outdoors in summer too. Or dock boat for a cocktail and dinner. My favorite in Monticello!
