I was waiting to write this and have been eager to - my experience at Spark physiotherapy and with Dr. Carlos Berio has been life changing. I suffered from lower back pain/herniated disc/sciatica flare ups on/off for 6 years. I would restart and start physical therapy everytime I had an episode with no relief in sight. I would continue to go in hopes each time a physical therapist would present a different outcome over the years. They would tell me to continue the exercises at home to find relief and be consistent. I would complete my physical therapy all to feel discouraged because my pain would either plateau, get worse, or just return in some way. I’ve tried everything in the book to seek an ounce of reduction in my pain - chiropractors, electro acupuncture, regular acupuncture, massage therapy, Chinese herbal medicine, you name it. Over the years I began to lose hope. In January 2023 I had the worst flare up in my life. It took me out - I’m talkin left leg numbness all the way down to my toes, shin pain, excruciating pain practically 24/7, I couldn’t even bend or do the most simplest of movements, I was walking crooked and was losing sleep due to the intensity of pain. I could barely stand in the shower. I couldn’t even sit. Everything hurt. At the time of my flare up I had just completed my physical therapy sessions at Medstar physical therapy in Navy yard DC. It was evident that all my hard work and time dedicated to seeing a therapist there 2-3 times a week for months was useless. I began searching for a new physical therapist. I stumbled across Spark and thought I would give it a try. I kid you not - after just my first and second consult my pain decreased by 40%. He gave me what my body could handle and knew exactly how to break things down in a way that had me build my strength and decrease my pain. I just ‘graduated’ today after seeing Dr. Berio just 5 times over the course of 3.5 months. He was so attentive to my specific pain experience and range of motion - I think that was really key for me. Over the years I kept being told to do the same workouts over and over again in hopes it would “strengthen me” but all it did was debilitate me over time. Dr Berio really creates individualized care plans and really takes the time to break down and explain what is going on. His goal is to decrease the frequency and need to see him. Sometimes I would question him like are you sure I don’t need to see you again this week? And he would insist that the goal was to need him less. He is truly An Angel. I feel like I can live again without fear of throwing out my back. I can complete simple tasks that I struggled with for years with no problem like putting on pants, socks, or even doing RDLs in the gym. I can’t even believe I am where I am, I thought I would be in this pain cycle forever I started to believe that was my life. Thank you Dr. Berio and the wonderful kind staff at Spark. You have given me my life back :)
My only regret is not finding them sooner. I am accustomed to paying for my own healthcare, so I avoid most of it. But Spark can take my money because they're the only treatment provider that's actually helping me manage my injuries/range of motion/agility. Highly recommend for any adult who's trying to stay in the game. (I know they help student athletes, too.) Both my husband and I rely on them to keep us running, biking, swimming. THANKS CARLOS, MATT, KRISTEN!
SPARK Physiotherapy saved my life! Last April I couldn’t stand up due to terrible back spasms.
At the emergency room I was given a strong pill “cocktail “ and a referral to a neurosurgeon. I was desparate. What to do now?!! And then a friend recommended SPARK. I showed up with tears running down my eyes, my crooked frame and with little hope. After some tests Dr. Kristen diagnosed the issue and after a dry needling session I walked out of there like a human- with my back straight. After the second session my life was back to normal. Hallelujah. A true miracle in my book. I am forever grateful. I highly recommend SPARK Physiotherapy to everyone with any pain. All of the therapists are top notch and extremely knowledgeable. Do it- trust me on this one.
All three of the therapists that I've worked with here (Carlos, Matt, Kristen) are amazing. I tried to go to another PT place near my house (Solutions Physical Therapy) because the insurance seemed easier to manage, but it was a huge mistake. After three sessions there to try to treat a shoulder/neck injury, I had not been given any dry needling that I asked for and felt that I was simply being rushed, as my therapist was always trying to move to his next appointment.
In one hour with Matt, he found muscles in my shoulder that I didn't even realize were causing me problems and he FIXED THEM. It was literally amazing. By the end of the hour, I had already restored almost the full range of motion of my neck and head. It felt like 3 hours, but it was just an hour to diagnose, treat, and to give me stretches to do at home to prevent soreness. Worth every penny.
I have been going to Spark for about 10 years. The team has helped me through injuries and recoveries from surgeries. I know that I am in good hands. I know they care about me as an individual and my overall progress. In November, 6 months after a big surgery, I was cleared to start exercising again. Six months later I was deadlifting again. I am grateful for their expertise, encouragement, and supportive community.
