This restaurant got wonderful reviews so we were excited to try it. It was late in the day when we arrived in town after a long day of traveling and the restaurant had only a few diners. We enjoyed our well prepared mixed drinks as we ordered from our friendly server. My husband ordered a pork selection and I ordered a dinner salad with salmon that also said came with goat cheese. When my salad arrived, I noticed there wasn't any goat cheese on it and asked my server about it. She informed me that it was on it. I moved a piece of lettuce and behold there was a piece of goat cheese hiding under the leaf that was truly 1 inch long by 1/2 wide. It barely filled a teaspoon. I asked our server if it would be possible to get just a bit more goat cheese, since the tiny teaspoons worth just didn't seem to add anything to the salad. She said she'd have to ask, but seemed apprehensive about getting the chef to give me more. A few minutes later she came back and said the chef would give me a little more, but would need to charge me $1.00. Come on, $1.00? This must be a very exclusive, artisanal cheese? Seriously, the chef thought 1 teaspoon of cheese is worthy of putting it on the selection as part of the salad? And in addition, my husbands pork was so underdone that it was raw it sections. The waitress sympathetically compensated us with a dessert, which added a sweet ending to our expensive and only so-so dinner

Wonderful meal! Every course was outstanding, from the fried Brussels sprouts, to the blackened chicken penne, to the world's best creme brulee, and that's no exaggeration!
Nancy was the kindest, funnest, most gentile server ever, we wanted to adopt her.
We were just passing through this town, but hope to return for another meal like that one.

I had been to the Southern Inn many years ago when it was under a different management and it was just "Greek" themed food because of the family that ran it. It didn't try to be anything, the service was straightforward, and food was filling and good.
This time, we found the food to be pretentious and expensive. One dish, the rigatoni and Italian sausage, could have been rigatoni over crumbled dog food. Its appearance was a complete turn off. The sauce was watery and awful to look at.
The pecan pie was flavorless. The place is very noisy The bread was just slices of little warmed up commercial thin sliced baguette bread. There was maybe two slices per person. The salads were just very plain and limp. All in all it was an expensive disappointment.

We went to Lexington VA to visit the many sites. We came upon the Southern Inn Restaurant from an ad in the local paper. We found that it didn't open for an hour so we went to see Stonewall Jackson's home. When we got to the restaurant it was about half full ; the hostess greeted us; then she told us that they weren't going to seat ant more customers due to the fact that they were expecting a large group of people coming soon with reservations.
I politely pointed out that there were several small tables for Two that couldn't be used for any large group since that we're in different parts of the restaurant .
She shook her head to agree but said . Sorry , Please come back in an hour and would be happy to serve us.
Well we found a lovely bistro down the block. We Will NEVER DARKEN THEIR DOORWAY AGAIN..

First class food, drinks and service. Reservations highly recommended Friday through the weekend. Sunday brunch is extra special. Well worth the trip. Very community minded owners. You'll frequently find them providing food for local events.

Had many very solid dining experiences here over the years. Highly recommend the fried chicken. I would describe cuisine as modern southern, but I do note that they have always served and continue to serve liver and onions, which is why I have often gone there with my father. You can't get that at many high end restaurants. Interior atmosphere is white tablecloth with dark wood paneling. Very warm and comfortable. They have many different seating areas, a bar, and interestingly, a huge window onto the kitchen.

Great restaurant!
I had the lentil & quinoa salad which was perfect! Wonderful tasting & fresh ingredients!
Then for my entree I had the trout and it was beautifully presented & lovely!
My partner had the fried chicken & he said it was the best he had ever had. Our server KB was terrific. So happy we took a chance & went here while we were traveling thru the town. Oh The dessert!!!!!!! OMG !!! If we ever come into this area again we will definitely eat here.
