I just got back from a nearly 3-hour visit in which my dog was never seen by a vet. We brought our recently adopted dog in because she was throwing up a lot and we wanted to rule out anything physical (we suspected that nerves over being in a new environment is the root cause). We were told shortly after intake that the vet had to euthanize an animal and then perform another unspecified procedure, and that we would be seen after those were done. No problem--it's an emergency hospital, so it wasn't a surprise that emergencies were happening.

We were led into the exam room at about 7:45, had a discussion with the vet tech about our dog's background and presenting issue, and she left. She came back in about an hour and a half later and said that we should be seen "soon" (15 minutes or so) and left again. About an hour after that (10:15), we realized we still weren't going to see a vet anytime soon and left.

Basically, they charged us $85 to do a basic intake with a vet tech and then sit in a room. If they felt we were just being overly cautious with our dog and nothing was seriously wrong, someone could have come in and just told us that. If it was something serious, she would have died in the exam room waiting for them to do anything for her.

We had visited the Fort Lowell location with two of our previous dogs, and they were wonderful there. Apparently, that doesn't carry over to this office. I will do anything in my power to avoid going to this hospital should another emergency arise in the future.

UPDATE: Our pup starting throwing up again as soon as we got her home, so the Fort Lowell office took her in right away. They also applied the exam fee I shouldn't have been charged at Broadway to the services they rendered. They did x-rays and gave her an anti-nausea medicine, so she apparently has/had something going on. I was very grateful that Fort Lowell saw her and quickly; however, this turned into an all-night ordeal and it never should have.

Our 11 year old dog suddenly became frantic eating geass, the carpet and constantly licking the floor. She vomited several times and appear to have difficulty breathing. We checked into the hospital at 1015 on a Sunday night. She was restless and appeared to have difficulty breathing. We were given the estimated cost up front and had to sign contract before she received any help at that point I would have signed anything. She was taken to the back room for an x-ray and labs. She was gone about 15 minutes. When she was brought back to us amazingly she was back to her usual mellow self and even fell asleep. No explanation as to why the sudden improvement. We sat in the exam room for hours. No one came to check on us or let us know what was going on. My husband would wander out of the room and could not find any employees. He did say there were new patients in some if the rooms. I thought maybe they forgot about us. Finally at 3 am they brought us the bill for $750 and we were told we could bring her back if needed for a scope of her throat ( x-ray was good labs a little off). No point she was better. We were told they would bring us her medications to help with her stomach and antibiotics not sure why antibiotics. We sat for another 45 minutes. Finally at 345 am we were let out of the building. I am pleased she turned around quickly my question is why if she suddenly improved why didn't they let us reassess the need for all the expense test and why make us site for hours.

If you can go anywhere in an emergency don't go here. Last night I called because our dog had been bitten by a snake in the middle of the night. They claim to truly be concerned, however in the end if you have no money upfront you have no service. Our dog passed away due to his injuries, by the time we found someone to look at him the venom had affected over 80% of his red blood cells. This is a business all about the Benjamin's and nothing else their concern only goes as far as your wallet does.

I had to rush my dog here, due to a medical emergency. Unfortunately, she died on the way there. The staff was super friendly, and showed sympathy for my loss. It was nice to see and feel that. They actually care. And the card the staff sent me in the mail was very pleasant to receive, as well. They were very professional and took care of my needs. Thanks for the lasting impression.

If I could do negative stars I would. DO NOT EVER TAKE YOUR ANIMAL HERE EVER! We decided to go here because they were close. Please use Valley Animal I made a $1000 dollar mistake. I should of just drove further to Valley Animal. This place is unprofessional, dirty and understaffed. 5 hours and $1000 dollars and their only suggestion is a cat scan. Took to next emergency vet 30 minutes no test and a confident diagnosis. Horrible place never use them.

I don't like to write negative reviews but feel this one is neededTook my 8 year old dog In last Saturday due to sudden loss of eyesight and weight loss. After calling ahead and making it seem like I would be seen right away I waited for almost two hours for my dog to be seen. Finally they check out her eyes and I see the doctor. She informs me that my dog has cataracts and that it's not really an emergency issue and that I should follow up with her normal vet. They didn't do blood work or anything. On Monday I took her to her normal vet. In 5 minutes they had us in the room and did blood work and told me that my dogs blood sugar level was 580. My dog is diabetic. My vet and his assistant said they could smell the ketones in her breath. They told me I needed her to get to a 24 hour animal hospital asap as she was not doing well at all by then. I didn't take her back to Southern Arizona for hospitalization after the failure to diagnose her. I took her to Pima Pet on Speedway. They have been great and she is doing much better.

I cannot believe they didn't do blood work on my dog given her symptoms or smell the ketones that my vet and his assistant smelled.

Years ago I had another bad experience at this emergency center. I guarantee I won't have another here because I won't ever be going back.

Fine care, but disreputable and dishonorable. We spent $2,987 for our dog to be treated for dog bites -- it was an emergency. He stayed one night and left with two drains in the biggest wound. We were told he needed the drains removed in 3 days and either they would do it or our regular vet. When I asked if there would be a charge or would this be included in the incredibly expensive bill we just paid? No charge. Not so. No matter what we were told on Sunday there would be a $75 charge. The vet on duty would not come out to discuss this with me so I spoke with the administrator. She said fine she'd take it out of the pay of the tech who told me. I said OK, an answer I knew she didn't expect. Sue (no last name given) backtracked and insisted on the $75 charge. We left and will be going to our local vet who will charge us I know but I can't do business with a vet who treats its clients -- not the animals -- so dishonorably. Hope we never have another emergency, but I cannot give business to this disreputable vet anymore. Caveat emptor.

I really think they need to update their information! Many people rely on what is posted - and this still shows open 24 hours daily. Is this really still a 24 hour emergency resource?

Thank you for taking such good care of our Lilie in ICU! Your prices are way over the top. It is a shame that the government doesn't regulate your prices the same as humans.

We took our little Codey boy in and were very pleasantly surprised with the kind, caring, knowledgeable and professional staff - from the receptionist and the techs to Dr. Crawford. Everyone treated our hurting, scared little guy with care and compassion. We were kept fully informed during the process of his care, including any options. They even called to check on him a few days later.
OUR TAKE AWAY: A very experienced, knowledgeable and empathetic staff of great professionals who care about what they are doing - If only all of us humans could always receive this great overall level of care!!
Codey thanks the entire staff for getting him on his way back to the energetic and playful boy that he is!

    Sincerely,
    Jeffrey and Steven

Our yellow lab was suffering from weakness and we took him in. While he was being examined he had a seizure and was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Within 48 hours he went completely downhill and we decided to have him put to sleep. It was an extremely difficult and heartwrenching decision for our family. Our dog was 10 and was a member of our family. We received nothing but compassion from Southern Arizona Veterinary Specialists, they showed true respect to our dog. The vet was knowledgeable and helpful, the techs were very sweet to our lab. The facility is clean, which is a must when you have many animals going through. After we put him down we received a sympathy card in the mail. Wish we would have found this office sooner in his life.
