I always have a great time when I'm here, the wildlife and setup is fantastic. They have a new walkway bridge and plenty of new paths to explore and wander through. Never a full moment and a wonderful place to come , either alone or with family. Lots of walking so wear comfortable shoes! Lots of photo opportunities as well.

Honestly, what more can I say that hasn't already been said? The San Diego is world-famous, and rightfully so. The experience is almost overwhelming for a visitor, with so many animals to see in so little time. Spending an entire day here was simply not enough. Everything is so well-maintained and, from the looks of the construction going on, about to get even better. The entrance fee here may be steep, but completely worth it. Schedule an entire day for a visit and come say hi to all the animals! Especially the koalas!

One of the best Zoos in the country for a reason, it's an awesome place to visit! Very easy to get in the door and start seeing all the animals. Everything is super clean, as well as the enclosures (which are usually pretty large and elaborate). Plenty of cool information everywhere about what you're looking at, and the staff and volunteers are always there to help.
Do:
Wear comfortable clothes and shoes.
Bring some water in a hydration pack if you don't want to buy bottles.
Get a map when you walk in.

Great place for the family. Go early and get a two day pass. I was truly amazed that they allow you to bring in your own food and drink. There are several picnic areas as well. There are actually some pretty good places to eat if you don't want to bring your food. The animals are very well cared for and you can tell that all of the staff enjoy their jobs. Very informative Park good for all ages if you live nearby consider getting an annual pass

I usually don't enjoy zoos but this zoo has earned every star. It is extremely clean and well kept. The staff is very knowledgeable and caring. The park is very large with much to offer. Don't miss visiting this zoo if you are near the San Diego area. Wear comfortable shoes and give yourself 4-5 hours to enjoy what the park has to offer.

I have mixed feelings about this zoo.
On one hand, the habitats & zoo grounds in general are second to none. The entire place is beautiful and you can tell that the zoo truly cares about trying to give it's visitors a top-notch experience.
What left me a little unfulfilled was the lack of animals which is the entire point of going to a zoo. The first real exhibit that I visited was the tortoise display. That exhibit really got my hopes up for the rest of the zoo! They had at least 6 males and 6 females, most of which were huge and entertaining! .. Then I started seeing the other Exhibits.
On many accounts, I would rush to a new section in hopes of seeing exactly what I saw at the tortoise area, only to see that they had just 1 animal of that particular species. Often times, that one animal would be hiding or so far away that it was hard to see them, if you were able to see them at all. I do understand that the animals need space and that not all species can be housed in multiples but in all I did walk away feeling like the experience was a little hollow. For example: 1 Otter in the display? That's all?!
In all, it's still a good zoo but it's the second best zoo I've seen.
The Denver Zoo is still number one in my heart, despite there being so much that's done right at the San Diego Zoo.response / report this review -

The San Diego Zoo is incredible; full of a huge variety of animals, plants and creative ways to displays all of their species. Their conservation efforts and educational experiences offer such reward to the world, this is a must stop for all tourists and residents in San Diego County. Admission/annual passes are a tax write off as the zoo is a non profit organization that just turned 101 years old!

I'm a zoo regular with a Keepers Club pass and go at least twice a month. Despite being so close to the downtown area, the zoo is it's own little slice of paradise. All of the trees and jungle protect it from most of the sounds of the outside world, and while San Diego doesn't really have an issue with Air quality anyway, there is definitely no issue here. The animals are all very well taken care of, constantly you'll see them being groomed, fed, or with enrichment toys.
Only certain types of animals are kept solitary, and they are solitary in the wild. The zoo promotes breeding to help prevent extinction, which is why a lot of these animals are in captivity in the first place, or because they cannot survive in the wild. What I love most about the zoo is that despite the fact that everything here is pretty pricey, they are 100% non-profit. They pay their employees and pay for advertising, and the rest is towards things that benefit the animals. They are constantly changing and renovating something at the parks, and there is always something new to see.
They are definitely worth a visit every time you're in San Diego, and if you're a local, just going a couple of times a year is worth the price of a yearly pass. They also offer benefits to pass holders, including a monthly early day for Keepers club where we get in an hour earlier than the public. It's really a great time to go before it gets crowded and hot.
The summer nights and Jungle bells are great too, I wish the zoo was open late for longer periods of time because it's really nice to go after work sometimes!response / report this review -

This Zoo is incredible. I think I had more fun than my then 2 and 3 year old. We went in early 2016. We had so much fun the animals are easy to find, not like in a lot of zoos they're either very far or almost dead (Not kidding by the way!). This zoo is well kept and very nice.

Great place for everyone, be it kids or adults.Has free parking, lots of good restaurants inside the zoo, nice souvenir shops and clean restrooms. Very-very friendly staff. We loved seeing all the animals especially Panda and beautiful birds like Flamingo. Children can also pet goats and sheep and feed Giraffe. Very well maintained and a super nice place to spend a day. Also, we bought one day plus tickets and loved watching a 15 mins 4D movie. It's a great way to take a break and relax. All in all absolutely worth the money and time.

One of the oldest zoo's in America if not the oldest. I was there during spring time and there were offspring in most of the enclosures. The animals seemed to be relaxed and a great breeding program is usually a good sign i figured. Definitely top on my list in San Diego. Its a huge zoo so come wearing comfortable shoes.

Where do I even start? This zoo is, in my opinion, second to none. I'm not kidding, this place is utterly stunning and will actually ruin other zoos for you because it is that good. Imagine being able to see giraffes without any sort of net or cage between the two of you. Or seeing animals in habitats which actually fit their individual needs. This place has it all. I can't say enough about this place. I'm from the East Coast and I'm actually looking into moving to San Diego because it will put me closer to this zoo. If you like zoos, do yourself a favor and visit the San Diego Zoo.

I absolutely love the San Diego Zoo! I have come here since I was a child with my parents and now I go there as an adult just for fun. My wife and I purchased the membership so we can go whenever we want. It is the perfect Sunday walk. It's a great time all the way around. Always something different, always something fun. World class exhibits, friendly staffcant wait until summer when the African Rocks exhibit is finished and ready for the grand opening!

The best zoo I've ever seen. Definitely worth buying a year pass if you live in the area and can make it to either the zoo or the Safari park at least 3 times in one year (which is very easy to do). Be sure to bring sandwiches/snacks if you don't want to pay for outrageously overpriced food. Bring a refillable water bottle as well. And sunscreen, especially in the summer time. Excellent place for kids, but don't bring any if you truly want to enjoy leisurely checking out the awesome collection of animals. Animals are treated extremely well and the enclosures keep growing in size. I'm pretty sure than a percentage of all profits from food/gifts/activities goes into helping animals

Best zoo I have ever seen. Does not feel like animal jail. Well designed, huge, impossible to see everything in one day. Year pass is a great value. Good variety of animals, and their breeding programs help maintain healthy animal populations. Helpful staff, and you can drink while you explore the zoo. Food prices are reasonable, beer is a bit pricey, but at least they have good beer.
