Great margaritas & food. Our waitress was wonderful. Always a good time. We were there at 12:30 & only had to wait a short time for a table of 8, on a Saturday.
One of the best places for Mexican food in the area. Really delicious fresh meals. They have been around forever and there is a reason behind it. Far better choice than going to the regular Mexican chains. Parking is a bit weird though. There's a train track running a few feet away from the place. But it's really good on the whole.
a lot of people rave about this place and I don't see why. There salsa taste like water downed tomato soup. And there beef n chicken for the fajitas had 0 flavor. This place was packed and I don't understand why. Maybe the normal people wanting beer? All I know everything was slow and not all that. 3 stars is pushing it
In the late 70's we started out trying all the Mexican eateries on Southwest Blvd. We still eat at Ponaks. The food is consistently good. Not great like the Margarita's, but good. A couple of the folks have been working there as long as we have been eating. Try the burrito with a fried egg. Yum!
Ponak's is pretty much my favorite Mexican restaurant. I have come here since 1989, and love their #16 pork burrito meal. Their rice is so good, and not just an afterthought, like at most Mexican restaurants, with peas, carrots, and corn in minute quantities within it, imparting a great extra flavor to it. Their Taco Sonora is also highly recommended. Their margaritas are very strong, with no sour mix to be found. Just top-notch ingredients everywhere, and a great atmosphere. I come here every trip to KC, and have sometimes come to KC just to eat a meal here. Highly recommended.
I've been going to Ponak's since the 80's. I hadn't been there in many years, largely because the last experience wasn't so great, and there are tons of other options around.
I was invited to a get-together there last night, and reluctantly went. The parking is a mess (as it always has been) but I was able to find a spot down the street. I walked in to the noisy, bar-like atmosphere and settled in at the bar to wait for the rest of the group to arrive. The bartender was attentive and quick; it was actually fun to watch her in action while we waited.
After a while we made it to our seats and ordered guacamole and queso to go along with the red and green salsas. All were excellent. I see some reviews complaining about the salsa, but I liked it. Yes, it was tomato-ey, but also had a subtle spice to it. I wish I could figure out what the secret ingredient is in there because it really set it apart from other salsas.
I ordered a simple beef taco and a pork burrito without cheese. Both were very good, but nothing particularly special. Just simple Tex-Mex. The waiter was simply outstanding, and is the reason for the fifth star.
Went on a Friday afternoon during lunch. The place was packed and service was still very good and fast. I hadn't been there before so I let the waiter pick what I got. Very delicious! Can't wait to go back!
The food is good, but the margaritas are the real deal. Best in town, made strong with real agave tequila. There's usually a wait on Friday, Saturday, etc, but we just order a pitcher of margaritas from the bar and the wait isn't too bad. Ha!
Celiac friendly!! The food and drinks are great and the service is always wonderful. It's totally family friendly too. The food is always quick so you can be in and out with kids and babies real fast my favorite place to eat. 😍
Love this place! I get the potato burrito with rice and white cheese dip. I am addicted. Also, the bartender is so sweet and has an awesome Australian accent!~
Friendly staff. Clean. Big lunch menu with great portion size for the price. Regular specials, which are great. If you're looking for pretty decent Mexican food and a fun environment, check it out.
This was the first time we visited at Ponak's. We heard good things about the place and decided to try it. The food was great and the portions were large, everyone in my party did not clear their plates. The one thing that needed work was that we only saw our waitress twice, once to take the order and the other time to give us the bill so there were times we had empty drinks. Other than that it was a very enjoyable visit and will be a place that we return too.
The experience was not expected. When we arrived (we previously called ahead to reserve an area) we had to wait about 10 minutes before being seated. After being seated, they only ask for drink orders. For 45 minutes, we had to ask for a refill on drinks, on salsa, and chips. There was little to no napkins so we had to ask for that. When she finally got around to placing our orders, she informed us that our previous waiter just "left" and she has to retrieve all the drink orders again. Still no food orders. Long story short, I left without being able to eat. Worst experience ever and I will never come back.
The best thing things they have going for them is the style of the restaurant, the frozen strawberry margaritas, and the salsa dip (which lacks any distinguishing taste of cilantro, since I am not a fan of the stuff). I've been here about 3 times now and each time I find the food to be unremarkable. It's not the worst Mexican cuisine, but there are better. I've never tasted anything here I absolutely had to get the next time I came back.
