I came for a SPE conference and had a wonderful time enjoying the scenery and learning environment. The staff were friendly and the housing and food were good. Defiantly trying to come again!

Penland is a happy place as long as you are giving them money. But they have a history of neglecting worker's wage rights, and in my personal experience will not make financial amends for anything, including breech of contract. I was excited to be awarded a work study scholarship this past summer, but I have an autoimmune disease, so I made perfectly clear in my application that I cannot do a physically taxing job, in fact I could only participate if guaranteed an office position. They accepted my application, accepted my signed contract, and accepted my money without any indication that it would be a problem to accommodate my physical limitations. The day before I was scheduled to arrive at Penland, a staff member calls me to tell me that they will not accommodate an office position, despite it being clearly articulated in my application and contract. Long story short, I can barely function the first week from over-exhaustion, and by Friday I collapse with a fever, which develops into Hand Foot and Mouth disease. I am then told that I must leave campus immediately, because it is suspected that I have chicken pox (thanks, CVS minute clinic). When I try to address to the staff that I want my work study fees refunded because they violated the terms of my contract in such a way that caused bodily harm to me and prevented me from participating in 7 days of a 12 day session, I am told that catching a contagious disease is considered disruptive behavior, and any student may be removed from campus without refund for behavior damaging to the learning environment. So don't be fooled for a minute into thinking that Penland is a warm and fuzzy place.

I had a chance to visit Penland for their annual benefit auction. This is a magical place. Even if you visit outside of an auction, I'm sure you'll find it a great visit if you love art. Their gallery spaces are superb, and the people here are very friendly. The campus is situated on a mountaintop slope with unique buildings scattered throughout - it's beautiful, idyllic.

Penland offers classes at various times of the year, which I'm hoping to take advantage of in 2016. Perhaps the best recommendation comment I can provide is that Penland inspired me to pick up my paintbrushes again after I set them aside for nearly a decade. And, I hope to be a supporter of this inspiring place for many decades to come. If you're traveling the Blue Ridge and have a love for art, I recommend a visit. Be sure to pack an extra bag, though. If you're like me, you won't be able to resist leaving with a piece of Penland to add to your collection!
