If you like to visit man-made historical structures within naturally beautiful areas, plan your C & O Canal hike to include the Paw Paw tunnel, which was dug to eliminate several miles of river bending from the route of canal barges which carried coal from Cumberland, MD down toward the population to the east. Too bad we can't see how they managed their movements through this dark, man-made brick-lined shot through a mountainside to re-join the river's path.

It's cool to think that it was all built without any modern boring/mining equipment and that it still stands today.
The tow path is closed at one end of the tunnel, so while you can navigate all the way through, be prepared to walk right back when you're done. The "over the tunnel" detour will be a strenuous one if you're*not* in shape, but not too difficult if you are. Plan on slogging your bikes and gear on a single track uphill path if you're traveling that way.

Cool respite in hot summer. Great park surrounding tunnel. Tinnel along canal maybe unique in entire country.

Was disappointed, because I didn't realize that there was construction/repairs going on. I was more trying to do the C&O canal, but got derailed!!! Still able to visit tunnel, but couldn't continue thru without a huge, hard detour.

One of the most exciting things I have seen on the trail. This tunnel is very long and dark, worth spending some time in the area to explore. Going though the tunnel would recommend a flash light.

We had a great time today. If you're looking for something family friendly and fun that's free, you should go see it. Don't forget to take a camera. Where's the parking area to the tunnel isn't that far are two-and-a-half-year-old walk there and walk back fine.

Beautiful but scary. The towpath shelf on the south/east side is very narrow. I pushed my bike for a long way.
Make sure you have a good headlamp. We had 700 lumens!
