The rustic atmosphere walking in was excellent. That's about where excellent stopped. The waitress was nice and a tad bit slow with service. We ordered clam chowder, lamb, and a burger. Let me start out saying everything, and I mean everything was overly salty. There wasn't a bite that didn't make you reach for a glass of water. The lamb ordered medium rare was served deep red and rare. The amount of fat remaining on the ribs was overwhelming and was attempted to be masked with large amounts of burnt rosemary. I would guess that the chef has never prepared or cooked lamb before. The burger once past the saltiness was very bland. The fries were heated unevenly with the center being very undercooked. I would look elsewhere for a bite to eat given the meals served.
Quaint location with lots of atmosphere and one side has a water view. Roaring fireplace made a cold day seem cozy. Standard new American fare that is pretty good, decent service. Not sure what desserts are like, nobody asked if we were interested, or showed us a menu.
Sorry to say, couldn't get the bathroom deodorizer smell out of our heads!
The waiter was attentive and helpful. We watched as 3 other diners sent food back to the kitchen. Won't go back
Drinks were made well. Ample wine list for my grape loving wife. You must have the French Onion Soup, it's out of this world. The food was served hot and very well cooked. The staff is all pleasant and respectable to our questions and requests.
I went to the oxtail tavern with my family thanksgiving day. And was treated to an excellent meal. A turkey dinner with all the fixings and better yet the price was well worth it which included appetizer, salad meal and dessert for one price. The service was very good along with the staff providing excellent service we were able to eat our meal without being rushed .The food was excellent. I truly would recommend this place to try.if you are not in a hurry to go anyplace take a meal in at the oxtail tavern sometime enjoy the food and atmosphere
We have been to the ox head several times in the 80s/90s on our anniversary Tuesday Oct/17/2017was our 30th anniversary. Back in the day they did have prim rib and black berry brandy. As the menu has changed. Now they do not .We had meat loaf and pot roast salid and French onion soup.the waiter was polite and knowledgeable. I guess what I want to say over the years ox head changed over time as do people a little disappointed not degrading ox head it's a nice place to go.
The seafood sampler was better than I expected from an out of the way log cabin pub from the 1820's. The staff and the locals make it extra special. It's not where you are after all, but who you meet when you get there, right?
Today 12 incredible friends and myself ate here. I made reservations, they were ready the girl was exceptional, 13 of us talking, she did separate checks very attentive food excellent, the manager went out of his way took pictures outside of our group. Couldn't of had a better time or service. Thank you Oxhead Tavern
This place gets a lot of bad reviews it seems, but I'm not sure why. We went here for convenience because we were staying at the Sturbridge host. We had our dog and they don't accept them on the patio. But that was fine because dogs can go on the beach and we could get beers in plastic cups from the outdoor bar and go onto the beach. We ordered food to go from the outdoor bar. Easy, and prompt. Just about 15 minutes. The burgers we're awesome. Greasy and delicious. Fries we're good too.
Perhaps the inside is nothing to write home about. But the outside service was great, ambiance is awesome with the sun setting near the lake, and great burgers. Give it a chance.
My husband, two children and I came here for an early dinner. We were quickly seated and then proceeded to wait for twenty minutes. In that time, not one of the five people working came over. There was one group at another table, a couple seated at the bar and a handful of people on the patio. So, it really wasn't busy. After twenty minutes we got up and left. We went to a restaurant down the road and had fantastic food and service. Avoid the Oxhead Tavern if you would like any type of service whatsoever.
Wow! Horrible experience. The wait staff is just off (I don't know how else to put it ). Waitress couldn't keep up with her tables and the bartender was useless!! We had to get up and get our own drinks off the bar because they sat there for about 15 min. While bartender just sat there. The whole show was a train wreck!! And I mean SHOW!! It was pure tourture to watch. But we couldn't get out of there because it took the waitress 20 min to get the check. Food sucked! Don't bother.
Nice atmosphere, reasonable prices. great food
Starts with great promise, but the food is only mediocre at best. Other restaurants nearby are far better.
The soda and bread were great. that is why we gave this restaurant 1 star. We are lost for words on just how to describe the food or service. We are not complainers by ANY means but we both ( my husband and I ) agree it's hands down the worst place we have ever been to! We got a great laugh out of it though.. We laughed so hard that I criedππππ
Service was good and quick at the bar. I love The Rustic feel of the place . Didn't Massachusetts invent calamari? I've never seen calamari with Salsa before, not to mention such unseasoned and rubberized calamari. Beer was flat.
