Best school ever! Teachers rock, curriculum is great, very flexible. Perfect school. Wouldn't try anything else.
My son took OCA back for his first grade class and it worked out pretty well for us, as we traveled a lot. We were about to enroll him again, but then he was accepted to a local charter school. We gave the local charter school a try (it had a 2 year waiting list), but for fifth grade we decided to re-enroll him in Oregon Connections Academy because we saw him lose ground academically at his traditional school, which had issues w/ bullies at school and on the bus, the school were was weak on work and he just coasted, even while earning A’s he wasn’t challenged.
Oregon Connections Academy on the other hand allows our family to travel, even overseas and not take a hit for attendance. Our student is allowed to set their work schedule and can work ahead. In fact, when he was in first grade he was able to finish his required curriculum for the school year a month early.
I didn’t give 5 stars because, while they are better than any local school, they still have room for improvement. The computer system could benefit from further refinement and simpler operation, such as what Apple or Google offers.
The teachers have been super helpful and, in my experience have been easily available for email or phone conversations.
In short, this may not work for everyone but I am glad we are back.
It's advertised as being very flexible, it's not. We do a lot of sports and extracurricular activities. You have to have contact with the teacher 2 times per week so you can't wait to do a lesson later if your preparing for a tournament or anything else. They are pushy about assignments and testing. The other issue is that it is VERY easy. Kids are not getting a challenging quality education out of this.
Great School. I spent the last two years of high school here and earned a high school diploma. I then moved on to a public college with that high school diploma without any trouble. The teachers respond quickly and are in contact often and always willing to help. It's a great way to get individual help on subjects. All the material I learned in ORCA is great and is at about the same level of what I am currently doing in college, so it was great practice. This school also helped with time management.
My daughter resumed ORCA her Jr. Year. She was failing every class in public school and they couldn't follow her IEP to save their lives.
She not only got good grades A's and B's she graduated 6 months early.
