If it’s your birthday you have gotta come here- at least for the drinks! This is an iconic madison spot, and great for groups/ parties. Large variety of beers and drinks, and lots of options on the menu. Great burgers and cheese curds. Fun atmosphere to be in, especially on your birthday!

I usually play trivia at Nitty Gritty in Middleton and the service there is great. I went to the downtown Nitty Gritty and the service was pathetic. We had to flag the server whenever we needed anything.

I love the Great Dane. The nachos came without the guacamole and salsa (by the time it came we had nearly finished the nachos), my burger was overcooked, another in my party was to have sauce on the side which came on the burger when it finally came back there was no sauce anywhere, the drinks took longer than the appetizer and before we finished eating we were given the check while I was still holding my burger. As for the fries, I like McDonald's better. I am now waiting for the dessert, we shall see what happens. Also, if you are in the mood for a good taster, go to The Great Dane instead, they have more options and the display is more informative. Still waiting for that dessert

Great food and great service! This bar is known for its free birthday mugs and we went for my sister's birthday. The waitress was very attentive and patient with the little ones at our table. They specialize in burgers and can make them any way you like. I had a turkey sandwich this time which was also amazing. Always too many fries to finish too!

Good bar food, burgers and wraps. It is the "Birthday place", they give you a mug, free drinks and a balloon on the day of your birthday.

This restaurant was a quick walk from a training I attended at a nearby hotel. Sports bar atmosphere. Food was quick and sandwiches were good. I had a salmon sandwich. Cheap and filling lunch option.

This place is fun if you like to party and drink with all the college kids. They even offer free beer on your birthday. It can get really crowded and loud- which isn't really my jam. But this is definitely a place everyone should go once!

Great service and great food even their delivery is phenomenal. When I had ordered food for delivery I had asked for no cheese and no dairy products. They delivered my burger with a note saying the changed the bun because this bun was dairy free. Yep, they took the time to make sure that my order was exactly what I asked without me having to give every excruciating detail. I've been to many restaurants but this is the first one that every really made sure I got what I wanted :) THANK YOU NITTY GRITTY YOU GUYS ARE GREAT!

Friendly and fast service and all of the employees brought life into their work making the experience much more enjoyable. The food is fantastic and wait time was relatively fast for such a busy place.

A legendary Madison bar that is THE place to go on your birthday. The food and atmosphere are all good. Expect to wait for a table during busy times.

Good food, service, and atmosphere! We were seated in a booth, received our drinks very quickly, and our food earlier than expected. I ordered a prime rib sandwich and didn't even finish half of it, I was so full! The Wisconsin cheese curds are amazing, as usual. We went a little late at night, around 8 o'clock and there were lot of younger people around the bar. It looks like a fun place to hangout, whether you're grabbing supper or going out for a few drinks with your friends.

With the Nitty Gritty, you have to know what you are getting yourself into. I hadn't been here for my birthday for a couple years, and my last birthday reminded me why I loved the place so much.

Obviously this is a great place to go on your birthday. Free beer or soda or (this was news to me) a couple low cost cocktails all day! You get your mug (and a balloon or button if you are so inclined). Shots are varied and relatively inexpensive, and the food is solid. My personal favorites are the Gritty Burger and Fries (I can thank those fries for saving me from detox on my 21st Birthday!) and the boneless wings, which are HUGE thin chicken breast strips breaded and served in a choice of sauce.

The atmosphere is always fun, and really the only drawback is that it can be really crowded with somewhat slow service at times. I don't recommend it if you need to get in and out quick for a Badger Basketball or Hockey Game or for state High School tournaments.

But if you happen to have a day off on your birthday and can get a little loopy at lunch, this is a great spot.
