Good food and decent atmosphere Went in a group to try the 3lb Cinnamon RollIt was good but of course we couldn't eat it all.. it really is huge Other food and appetizers are good too Many reviews I read confirm that it used to be a little more classy and the place has lost exclusivity and class in recent times and it's no longer the atmosphere of a nice place but that of a cheap diner, kinda dirty looking tables and filled with loud people and the getto seems to have taken over a bit I did see some of that, but it remains a good place Not bad.

We went there after an activity for a bite to eat and to get one of their famous 3 lbs of cinnamon rolls. Went in seated ourselves and waited for service. A girl came by and drop off menus and said our waitress would be by in a few minutes. We sat and sat and no one came. Some one from table next to us went and asked for a waitress, so we decided to wait alittle longer. We gave them 15 more minutes and no waitress. My husband and I got up and left. So as far as giving them a star, they don't deserve even one. But for this to be seen I gave one star. My advice don't waste your time. I saw the roll, looked like a thick square piece of bread with a little white icing on it. Definitely not worth $12.00!! We won't be back.

After Sunday church we headed downtown to this establishment for breakfast, but miss it due to the time. They stop serving breakfast at 1100. We ate Deputy Special, Grilled Ham and Cheese, and the World famous 3 LB cinnamon roll. Service was great and the food was just as good. I would return and highly recommend. Very nice atmosphere and with a water and coffee our bill was 32.75 excluding tip. Thank you for reading.

I give 3.5 stars cause the food was good. Their chicken fried steaks are enormous! Ordered the deputy chicken fry. I'm picky about my chicken fried steaks: this restaurant is third best for chicken fries. The mashed potatoes were wonderful, green beans were great, gravy was a good consistency and the fried okra nice and crispy: not to soft and not like most places where it had been sitting out for awhile or had been refried.
Our service was superb from start to finish, food was ordered and on the table in a timely manner.
Didn't try the famous cinnamon roll.yet.
I didn't like the smell when I first walked in. It had an odor like at a nursing home. The bad thing was the ladies restroom. It was dirty, smelled bad, the toilet handle looked like it hadn't been cleaned in awhile, and the hand dryer didn't work very well.response / report this review -

This place is very popular for breakfast/brunch. It has an old-fashioned diner vibe; it's not a fancy place. The food is good and plentiful, too. One of their specialities is a gigantic cinnamon roll with icing. When I say giant, I'm talking about maybe 9 inches square and 4--5 inches high. It's definitely meant to be shared. It's pretty casual but there is table service and the servers are skilled.

I finally got to try this place out. I had the deputy chicken fried steak with Mac n cheese and mashed potatoes and the gravy was so good. The chicken fried steak was a lackluster but still good. The portions are amazing for the price. We also had the 3lb cinnamon roll and it was AMAZING! I thought something that big would be dry and flavorless but I was wrong. It was extremely busy when we visited on Saturday afternoon but even with the rush our waitress was attentive and when too much time lapsed another team member would check on us. So no complaints here. I wish I would have tried this place sooner.

The place was kind of packed when we got there, but we got seated right away, anyway. After what we saw on TV, I got a say it was just what we expected: a delicious meal with huge portions. We had the chicken fried stake and although we did finish it, we could've eaten half of it and would've been pretty satisfied. The dinner roll and the mashed potatoes were pretty yummy, too. The only thing that wasn't as good, for my taste, was the Mac n cheese. It tasted a little smokey, which was kind of odd for my taste. Anyway, the plate was so big that we had to order the cinnamon roll to go Just waiting for our stomach to empty a little bit to try to start eating the monster roll hehehe

The only tables available hadn't been cleaned yet, but the cheerful waitress cleaned the tables once she was able to. We had the cinnamon roll and chicken fried steak. The wait on the food was not bad, the food itself was decent. The fried okra was good, as was the mash.
The chicken fried steak was a bit tough, but it was breaded well. The cinnamon roll was quite huge, it will last me days.
It was a good experience overall, though quite claustrophobic due to how close the booths were to the tables.

Enjoyed my first visit here. Food was good wasn't spectacular like portrayed on TV. It was normal good food. I had a Chicken fried chicken steak with mashed potatoes and green beans and it came with a yummy roll. I pretty much ate every bite. We ordered a cinnamon roll to go because that's what they are really known for their Large cinnamon roll and chicken fried steaks. The cinnamon roll wasn't anything to brag on it was a lot of dough with a little bit of icing and cinnamon. I would not order that again, bit I would go back for a Chicken fried steak whenever I have craving for it. Service was good no complaints.

Came here while on vacation because we heard it was really good. I ate here on a Saturday for lunch and it was very busy. We got seated pretty directly and the service was good. It seemed a little too busy for the waitresses to keep up with and give excellent service. I ordered chicken fried steak fingers and fries. The fries were extremely cold and the steak fingers were not good at all. The menu says the chicken fried steak is award winning so the only thing I can figure out is that it was a participation award. It was very greasy and very bland. I also didn't care for the gravy that came with it.

We had family in town and they wanted to visit the home of the 3 pound cinnamon roll. This was my first time in the place, but it was amazing. The only downside is that everyone else evidently likes it too. We waited almost an hour to get seated and just barely made it in time to order breakfast. At least there is plenty to look at outside while we waited.
My wife had the cinnamon French toast with a side of bacon and I had the DPS sandwich which has a grilled chicken breast, sauteed mushroom & onions, and Swiss cheese. I also upgrade to the onion rings (highly recommended) and got a side of brown gravy to dip it all in. This was probably the single best grilled chicken sandwich I've ever had. It is has now changed my criteria for comparison.
Our meal was ended with a famous cinnamon roll shared around the table. Between the eight of us, we still ended up bringing home about a fourth of it.
If your in the need for good tasty food at a reasonable price, then this is the place. Just be ready for a wait if you go during a busy time.response / report this review -

This famous restaurant is known for their great food and their famous 3 Pound Cinnamon Rolls! Though I never ordered it, while waiting for our order we saw them carry out a MASSIVE plate with what looked like a large cake in the shape of a Cinnamon roll. Turns out that massive cake WAS their famous 3 Pound Cinnamon Roll. I ordered a Chicken Fried Steak breakfast, and I only ate about 1/2 of it, even with my large southern Baptist stomach! My order came out in 2 plates; The Fried Steak on one head-sized plate, and the eggs, toast and Hash Browns (which were just fried potato chunks) on the other. All of my food was great, but the Hash Browns were mediocre. I highly suggest that if you are passing through San Antonio, you should stop by Lulu's Bakery and Cafe for a stomach ache portion of food!

My husband and I are having the deputy portion of chicken fried steak dinner with skin on mash potatoes and gravy with green beans cooked with onions and bacon. It arrives at the table and it's piping hot covered with a light creamy gravy. Washing it down with a perfectly balanced large glass of half and half ice tea. Oh I almost forgot to tell you about the giant sweet rolls that are homemade everyday
The price vs portion vs quality of product is spot on and you definitely get what you pay for here. This place is a San Antonio Icon.response / report this review -

Great service. All the staff was friendly and everyone was moving at a very fast pace. The food was good and it comes in extra large portions. I ordered the country fried steak with potatoes and okra. Lots of gravy in top. This place is not for someone on a diet, that's for sure. I went ahead a decided to eat large today because you don't have much choice for eating light here. Hard to pass up the country fried dishes because that is obviously their specialty. I sat at the counter and say one country fried dish someone ordered as big as a large pizza, about 18 inches. They probably will have the 3 pound cinnamon roll for desert. It's as big as a cake. IF you are looking for a fancy place to eat, this ain't it but it's a great comfort food style restaurant

It's true! They have cinnamon buns the size of your head (or smaller dependingLol)! The service was wonderful. The country fried steak was enormous and delicious. They currently have all you can eat, country fried steak on Tuesday's. We also had onion rings and those where yummy! Great time over all with my family while visiting Fiesta festivities in San Antonio. We would definitely come back on our next visit as a family! I may come back sooner, since I live in Austin!
