Slightly pricey but worth the money. Great staff. Easy ride. Beautiful views 😍
Not the cheapest way to travel from/to WI/MI, but definitely the quicker and more relaxed way. Crew on land and on ship are exceptional. I suggest traveling in “first class” cabin - just a small extra fee in comparison to the benefits.
We drove 1 1/2 hours to Milwaukee to make my return trip home. We walked up and a guy with a very short attitude told us it had been canceled due to weather. We went up to the counter and the lady behind it was very unhelpful. I had to pry information out of her about getting a refund or rescheduling. She said I should have gotten a call. She's right. I should have. Needless to say, I had to call someone in Michigan to meet us halfway to pick me up. I understand weather can be unpredictable, but there's absolutely no reason to be rude and short with customers when they're the ones who are stuck. Ticket prices are really expensive. I'll just risk the tedious drive through Chicago at 3:00 a.m. next time.
Wonderful, relaxing experience! The staff on the boat was very nice and helpful. They were very accommodating to my elderly mother too. The boat was very clean and the food was very good. You may think it's pricy, but it's worth it. The only complaint I have is the rental car experience. While Lake Express doesn't handle that portion, you can certainly look up who does and just be prepared to wait for the sales rep to even come in to help you. We waited for 20 minutes for the rep to even come in. We had a reservation in for 2 months. You would think they would've known and been prepared for our arrival. But they were not and no one at enterprise would accommodate at all for us being late for our appointment once arriving. Security could've been a little more nice and not talked down to us, but the overall experience was awesome! Nice job Lake Express!
Very simple and easy to set up, book tickets online is the best way to go. Then basically you just drive your car up park your car on the boat ⛵ get out . then either chill out on the top of the boat and check out the scenery, or you can go inside the cabin and get yourself a cup of coffee or a cheeseburger or whatever you'd like. Relax in style as you cruise over Lake Michigan. Excellent way to travel. certainly beats driving 🚗
Went very smoothly. Didn't take a car, went solo. They took my luggage and I took my seat.waves were out but ride was smooth. Had a hamburger and it was surprisingly good. Beer and wine available. Priced as expected and not too expensive. Going to make this trip at least once a year.
This is a well run operation, so make sure you are on time. The boat has comfortable clean seating, many with small tables. The sun deck above is windy, but fun as you may spot cargo ships and there is no land in sight for much of the trip. They serve food and drinks at reasonable prices too. You may want to put your phone to sleep as there isn't a signal in the middle of the lake and your battery can go fast. Also, only the driver can park on the vehicle deck and you can't go back to your car until docked, so be prepared for that. We had a very smooth sailing at sunset and it was much more relaxing than circling around Chicago from Milwaukee to get to Michigan. Weather of course may affect those with a tendency toward sea sickness, but the stewards are well prepared to help.
Awesome experience. The captain and crew were fantastic.
While there is something a bit unsettling about driving 60 cars onto a vehicle and going across Lake Michigan, this is a great way to cross the pond on a calm seas day.
Rode lake express in June 2016, overall a great experience, easy to board, clean cabin, and good service. It is expensive though, myself and a motorcycle cost ~$150 one way, but it was worth it to avoid the mess of I-94 from Michigan to Illinois. P.S if you are driving from Michigan through Chicago to Milwaukee consider the 294 tollway, generally there is much less traffic on 294 than 90 which runs through downtown Chicago. Lastly if you want to avoid the utter chaos of I-94 and Lake Expresse's high fares consider Amtrak's Michigan services if you are traveling from Milwaukee/Chicago to west and southwest Michigan, fares are reasonable and travel times are comparable to driving and flying.
Sailing from Muskegon was a delightful experience. Weather conditions were not good coming back from Milwaukee on the 24th of Oct.(last day of sailing), but were able to do the second departure. The staff were very helpful in all aspects. Would certainly do it again. Beats driving through Chicago.
Overall great experience. I rode on a sunny & calm August Sunday, without bikes or car and checked my luggage. I used the ferry to meet family in Michigan who picked me up in Muskegon. I didn't take my car or leave it in the parking lot. Enjoyed a burger from the cafe, the first class cabin as I was traveling alone and ability to step outside easily to get a great view departing Milwaukee and arriving in Michigan! The staff are very friendly and helpful! My needs wouldn't require me to take the ferry often but I'd consider it given the great experience I had!
