Hi may I help you! I have no complaints. The food is good, the atmosphere is cozy and I'm a happy camper watching sports on the big screen TV.

Great tasting BBQ. The ribs weren’t quite as meaty as Joe’s, but they were delicious in their own way. I like the sauce here better than Joe’s, but that’s just me.
We had planned on hitting Gates while we were in KC, but after eating at Joe’s. When we got to Joe’s, line around the building. No thanks. Got over here to Gates, no waiting. Food was served quickly.
Delicious baked beans. Very likely the best I’ve had. I almost always add BBQ sauce to my beans (and slaw), and I didn’t even bother with these beans. Fantastic.

Best BBQ I have ever had. Definitely feels like a mom and pop shop which adds to the setting. I will definitely be going there again.

A must try Kansas City classic! When you walk in, be prepared for the ladies behind the counter to holler at you and get your order don't expect 5 star customer service. The employees at Gates mean business, and their business is good BBQ!
Walk in, grab a tray and place your food order. My menu favorites are their burnt ends sandwich, ribs, and the mix plate to share! They have delicious sides and deserts too! After you wait at the counter for your food, head around the corner to load up on sauce! They offer original Gate's BBQ, hot BBQ, sweet BBQ, and ketchup. Personally, I like to mix the hot and the original for the perfect amount of heat! After enjoying your meal, a busser will come around to clear your table. I always leave Gate's feeling full and satisfied! One of my favorite things about Kansas City!!!response / report this review -

The burnt ends sandwich was great and the onion rings. Enjoyed sitting up front and people watching everyone passing on the street. Wonderful and quick staff.

The ribs are great! All the meats and other food at this KC franchise you can't go wrong with especially when you need catering for a event. The only thing was I was disappointed that this was not a sit down with a menu and order with a server type of place. I felt rushed to order when I got here by the cashier and I had never been and was really unsure of what I wanted. Also its a bit pricey for how much I was given.

The atmosphere here is great. It's a nice place to take the whole family out on a special occasion or just a regular Friday night. The service is good and food comes quick. It is good BBQ. Most BBQ places never come close to meeting my expectations, this place does. I'm probably overly harsh when it comes to reviewing BBQ, but it's my favorite food so I have specific tastes. The meat here isn't too dry and the sauce is good. The only reason I took A star off was because it just isn't the best BBQ I've ever had. Definitely great food and worth checking out, but in my opinion is not the best.

Fantastic meats! Had the 4 boner and took some home for breakfast. Staff there were beyond attentive and I look forward to continuing our chat next time. Highly recommended!

Gate's is a Kansas City institution, so one has to eat here. The service is friendly and the atmosphere enjoyable. Prices are toward the low end. Unfortunately, that affects the quality of their beef. Still--don't pass up the opportunity to experience Kansas City barbecue at Gates. It is an experience like no other.

Ordering process doesn't work well for somebody new and needing to look over the menu without being rushed through.
I got the long ends (ribs evidently)
The ends were full of small bones not usually served on ribs.

Wow. I thought this is a fancy, expensive, sit-down restaurant. But it was better. The prices were very reasonable because you order by standing in line. Then you get to sit anywhere you want in this pretty, fancy, old fashioned restaurant. I had a sweet, elderly lady who found me a to-go box as well as coffee and ice water. She made my day. Service poor ,price very high ,not kid friendly, ribs where very dry and tough. To much sauce. Would not recommend to anyone. It was my first time going. Was very disappointed. I will stick to Jack Stacks its been the best so far.

No fuss, down and dirty, flavorful BBQ. It took a second for us east coasters/ southerners to understand the menu but the scent from the food took care of us. Way too much food for one serving but it is SO WORTH IT!!!! A variety of homemade BBQ sauces to match. You won't be disappointed!

Food is delicious. It's super intimidating when you walk in though. You don't pay until you get your food, even for take out. They will yell, "Can I help you? To stay or to go?" at you as soon as you come through the door. After ordering you stand off to the side and wait until your food is ready. All while watching them all doing different things, in different directions and yelling orders back to the kitchen and so forth. You'd think the place would fall apart operating this way, but they have it down to a science. It's very impressive to watch. When your food is ready they wrap it, have you pay and then you're on your way in less than 15 minutes.
It doesn't matter what you order, it's all delicious. Don't forget to tip them at the register. It's a very good show. ☺️response / report this review
