Rode 50 miles with a few friends and ended here, very nice, has running water, showers, a nice pavilion, and a little bit of history. If you are looking for a quiet place with a good slice of Americana, here's your place

The nation's first rail trail this stretch goes through 3 hand dug tunnels, and in general offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Limestone paved with many gentle (1-2%) constant incline/decline sections . Food, water and towns every 5 to 6 miles.

One of the best rail trails anywhere. The crushed rock surface is in good shape. There are 3 tunnels to bike through!

The tunnels make this trail unique. The small towns that are along the trail offer some good places for refreshments.
A must do if you like biking, and are exploring Wisconsin!

I have been coming to this trail since 1983. The tunnels is what makes this trail unique. The trees along the trail have grown to the point that it provides very good shade on hot days. Make sure to have a bright light as the tunnels will be very dark inside. Trail surface was hard and smooth.

Beautiful scenery trees all around. A few cows too. I loved it. 3% grade towards the tunnel the ride back was easier especially if you are pulling child carts.

This may be one of the few "less inspired" reviews. My riding partner is a seasoned "rails to trail" rider, and was happy with it, but I found the trail to be a bit disappointing. Bear in mind this is coming from someone who's accustomed to highway ridin, almost exclusively. Anyway, I tagged along to enjoy the landscape, only to find myself riding in a tunnel of vegetation the majority of the time. A very myopic experience, IMO. It got to the point where I ended up riding on hwy71, which runs parallel the entire route, and meeting my partner at the towns. The tunnels were interesting, but you can't ride through them, the floor is treacherous, and the longest one was basically like walking through a rain storm on a 40 degree night.

This is a very fun trail. You can easily run over 100 miles connecting to other trails.

Beautiful trail. Terrain is loosely packed limestone. We completed it with 700x25c road bikes but the trail was mostly dry. If wet you'd definitely want a wider tire. The 3 tunnels are fun but make sure to bring lights! The trail depots in Sparta, Kendall and Elroy provide great rest stops and souvenirs. Make sure you check their hours though.
