Gorgeous absolutely stunning. The view is spectacular. And with a lost of history behind it. Most of the volunteers are university professors so not only are they very knowledgeable about the history of the fort and the city itself, but their very passionate about it. So passionate it's contagious. You don't get bored listening to them talk, because they express it with such enthusiasm. Didn't expect to go and get a history lesson, much less enjoy it. Major props to the professors. This is obvious a must see attraction of florida, so rich with history and surrounded by beauty.

Hundreds of years of history! So much of the fort is intact and preserved. Beautiful views from the top of the fort. There is a stamp for your National Parks passport if you collect. Nice bathrooms that are well maintained. Parking lot is small, but nearby public parking makes up for it. I loved it! Give yourself 1-2 hours.

The only notable problem would be the parking. It took roughly minutes to park in the relatively small lot and the nearby parking garage was full. However it was not too costly to get in, which was pleasant to find out. The views are amazing and the people who worked and/or volunteered were very nice. All of it is wheelchair accessible except for a crawling passage to the powder room and the top floor. It was not too crowded and it is not that easy to get lost, so children fare as easily as any adult. It is to be noted that the walls on the top are not very high, so any children up there should be careful. Highly recommend to anyone sightseeing!

Castillo de San Marcos is a must-see attraction if visiting St. Augustine. Plan to visit during the cooler months of the year (November to February) to dodge the famous Florida humidity. Check the weather before you go, and dress in light layers, adding or removing as the day progresses. The location of the fort is gorgeous, overlooking the Matanzas River to its east. Parking is conveniently located so that you can park your car at the fort (though you must pay for parking), and visit multiple attractions within a comfortable walking distance. I highly recommend paying more to extend your parking time if desired so as to visit more local attractions or carve out time for a trolley tour. The educational experience provided at the fort will add a new dimension to one's understanding of American history.

The ticket is valid for a week after purchase, so you can visit any time. The fort is great, we highly recommend getting a good spot for the cannon shooting demonstration. If you’re history nerds like us, take the time to walk through each room and read the signs. Also interact with the staff, they are extremely helpful and full of knowledge of the history of the fort. Finally, don’t forget to check out the surrounding grounds. Great for kids and adults. Clean bathrooms as well.

I haven't been here since I was about 8 (mid 20s now). My husband and I had fun seeing how the soldiers would of slept and learning the history of the fort. They did a firing demonstration of one of the canons. It was cool. Also in the fall the weather is fantastic on the top of the fort with beautiful views.

There is a price to enter, and you have to pay for parking, but the Castillo is a very unique landmark and worth visiting. The rangers do demonstrations, and you can walk through and on most of the fort. The view from top of the walls of the fort is fantastic.Nearby food and shopping is an additional draw.

The structure itself is impressive and there is plenty to see. The displays are educational and the access is good as well. For me it is a bit pricey. You can walk around the outside for just the cost of parking which is about $2 an hour at the time of this review. If you want to go in it is $10 for anyone over the age of 15. It can be quite sweat inducing so make sure you have at least a water container to fill at the very nice water fountains inside the fort. There is a workbook and if you complete it you can earn a badge and a patch a great tool for keeping the more studious among us engaged in learning!

Lots of history! Really cool location to visit. Lots of local shopping, food, sites walking distance so make a day of this area. You do have to pay for parking. It can be very difficult to even find a place to pay to park. But well worth it! Must see if you appreciate history.

I thoroughly enjoyed taking pictures of this castle. I walked around it twice. Circled the top a few times and I loved the briefings by the park rangers of the rooms around the courtyard area. The staff was perky, friendly and volunteered infoespecially the older white haired guy at the counter.

Bonusif you are active duty or a disabled person, or 15 and younger.it is free with your National/Federal parks access card. They will issue one with proper identification. This allows you to bring 3 adults in for free.

My favorite attraction in our beautiful town. The self-guided tours allow for unlimited exploration. They have free admission on veterans day so mark your calendar! It's a great educational experience. Don't go when it's too hot because there is no A/C (only in the gift shop)

This place is AWESOME!! If you're even remotely interested in the History of the Imperial, and Colonial Era in the America's, this is a must see! The Castillo (Castle) was build to defend the first city in The United States. St. Augustine was being frequently raided, the Spanish, whom owned the colony ordered the construction of a massive masonry fort to defend the city. The city was attacked numerous times but never seized by force. The fort was held by the Spanish, British, and American Forces. The fort has been restored, and the deck still is full of cannons. The whole city is visible from the top of the fort. The majority of fort is still accessible, for self guided tours. Displays explain the history of the fort, with artifacts, and re-assemblies of the former uses. Cannon firing demonstrations on weekends! Highly recommend!!

Extremely knowledgeable and friendly staff who are willing to spend extra time to chat with you about history and tell stories. The fort itself is a marvel on its own. Entering the building is like taking a step back in time Try to catch the cannon demonstration! You feel the shock wave from it firing in your chest! It's definitely a must try full-immersion experience! Have been back several times!

This place was pretty cool. It had a lot of rooms that you can go into and each room had information on what the room was used for and some important facts about people that lived and passed through the castle. They have scheduled cannon firings which the kids enjoyed. There isn't too much to really explore here so you won't spend too much time at the castle. There is definitely a lot of other things to do close by which is nice. If your a senior you get in free and they give you a membership card that allows you and 3 guests to get into any national park for free.

I'm a history buff from the Shenandoah Valley (full of history and sites to see) and the Castillo sits at or very near the top of my list of favorite historical sites to visit.

The site is very well preserved and there was an abundance of park staff stationed throughout in order to answer any questions you might have.

Almost all of the site was accessible (they do close the gun deck in event of thunder/lightning, so keep that in mind) with lots of informational signs (that managed to not get in the way of what you were looking at).

My wife and kids (ages 13 and 14) all seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves as well, which was great.

The views from the gun deck are spectacular (all the way around).

If you plan on stopping and seeing everything and taking in the informational video that they present I would plan on spending about two hours there. We did it in about an hour without the "movie." Also worth noting that kids 16 and under get in for free and the tickets that I bought for my wife and me were $10 (each) and allowed us to get in for 7 days (in case we wanted to come back for the cannon firing exhibit or any of the myriad other special events they have throughout the week).

Highly, HIGHLY recommend visiting!
