My family and many friends have been regular renters of the railroad houses for many years. This was because of the very fair prices and the full amenities that came in the houses.

This year they have raised there rental prices to the point where many loyal renters may not be able to rent as much as in years past which is very disappointing.

I would reconsider raising prices because you will bite the hand that feeds and will take away the only affordable option near snowshoe mountain.

I would have Given 5 stars but because of the raised prices I have to give 1 star.

Just an amazing experience. Rented shanty town house in the village, which was CLEAN though rustic. Walk ways made it easy to walk around at night. The trains are awesome. No experience like this on the east coast. Highly recommended though remote and winding roads to get to it. We were on the train for 5 hours up to Bald Knob, the train guide was good though the sound system was just average. Just a wonderful experience.

Thought this was going to be cheesy. IT WAS NOT! Fun times to be had, good stories to be heard, and awesome choochoo ride all the way up and down the mountain. This is a must go with your family.

If you want to see beautiful fall foliage, consider taking the Bald Knob excursion in early October. The views are breathtaking every step of the way. When boarding, be sure to sit on the side facing the parking lot instead of the one facing the depot. I encourage you to bring along ear plugs, especially if you are sitting in the car closest to the locomotive. The whistle was loud even with the earplugs.

If you love nature and the sound of trains this is the place for you to visit. This is an old logging camp. They still use the Shay Engine's that pulled the logs down the mountain. Ride to the top and the views are fantastic.

You can see Greenbank Observatory from the top. It's just a great Steam Locomotive ride.

Great place to visit. The staff knows these trains and the history of the area. We took the 4.5 hour train ride to bald knob. AWESOME!!! Very educational and fun.

Cass is one of those very rare tourist railroads that authentically capture a bygone era, in this case of a mountain logging railroad. This is a REAL logging railroad, the steam locomotives are of the type that operated here (some are the actual ones) and the the town of Cass is a real preserved logging town. Be prepared for coal smoke, sometimes cold temperatures with open windows, bench seats, and hard working steam locomotives spewing smoke and cinders. That is part of the experience here. If you can't stand it, the modern coaches and diesels in Elkins WV would be a better choice for you. If you need a lighter dose of steam and open air, the Durbin Rocket may be for you. If you truly appreciate experiencing history, then this is heaven.

The ride itself climbs from the Greenbirer River high into the WV mountains. The long one goes to Bald Knob, where the long vistas are. The best views are at the top, but you will see a few others for short periods on the ride. If you have kids or others of short attention span or endurance, the shorter ride to Whittaker is better for you. You will not see the vistas, but there is a neat museum of logging equipment at Whittaker to explore during the layover. Both pass through the switchbacks to gain altitude and have extensive views of the mountain forests. If you truly love the experience, you should do both.

Cass is a mecca for logging steam locomotives, the ones that have gears to their wheels to allow them to run on curvy and uneven track. There is nowhere else you are going to find such a collection of them, let alone this many operating. Tours of the maintenance shops are available and recommended if you are into that. The town is a real logging company town and much of the logging equipment is still there, including the remains of the lumber mills. Town tours are also available or you can just walk around and soak in the ambiance. The old company store serves meals and has a large gift shop but has limited hours.

Cass is in a radio quite zone because of the nearby Green Bank Radio Astronomy Observatory (a good side trip) so you will not be making cell calls. There is wi-fi provided in the immediate area though. There is no gas station, no hotels and only one or two eateries with limited hours. There are services in nearby towns like Green Bank and the Shoeshoe ski resort, but for the true experience the best option is to rent one of the houses in the company town come prepared for the experience.

We have visited Cass twice and ridden both runs (once to Whittaker and twice to Bald Knob) and we hope to return again. If you love EXPERIENCING history, you will love Cass.

Very unique destination. Stayed in pet friendly row house #253. Probably best location in park. High on hill, nice view, close to activities and separated from other row houses. Nice inside, but a little less romantic in real, than in pictures 😄. Clean but had that big empty feeling. Still, very nice, cool. Stayed early May, and got there on a Sunday afternoon. Was unaware the park was completely shut down on Monday. So was able to hurry up and see and photographed everything that would be closed the next day. Should have been told, but was GREAT to be the only person in the park (town) ! Walk the dogs though the town numerous times, and snooped around in places I don't think I would have if park was opened 👀👀. Had a good time. Friendly staff.
