Would get minus 10, but 1 star will have to do. I have had patients of mine who have been here many times. by the way, they also don't take AIDS patients. Ex staff member I know has told me this too. They let the people with eating disorders starve, They are very abusive and abuse their authority on the adolescent unit. They have have sick pervs who have worked for them, same as Hillmont. As long as your drugged up there is no problem in their opinion I am very thankful no one got hurt. But the fire is Karma. Life is unfair, deal with it.

So, so sad - Vista Del Mar Hospital, destroyed by fire Living in the central valley near Fresno, in 2009, I was taken to Vista when I was in crisis, as the central valley lacks psychological services. I have been inpatient on several occasions. Although I have experienced a few disappointing situations at Vista, my treatment team, headed by Dr. Atman Reyes, has always been able to generate a treatment plan that would pull me out of crisis mode. I truly believe I owe my life to Dr. Reyes and the the regular staff on G unit. I really want these individuals to know the impact they have had on my life.
I want each and everyone to know that I am crying with you. You all have been in my thoughts since learning of the fire. Such a horrible tragedy, especially this time of year. My blessings and continued support as decisions are made with the hope of rebuilding. There are many individuals, like me, that need a safe place to go at difficult and trying times in our lives.

    Staff:
I was in the adolescent unit, which was not all too great. I personally would not return to the facility, nor would I recommend it to someone in need of serious help. The staff were the least helpful and at many times seemed to disregard the fact that they were dealing with kids who needed support. When faced with a distressed patient, the staff often looked to medication instead of a more rational way of solving the patient's issue. Furthermore, I found that when I made a request such as speaking to a therapist, they said they would get back to me, only to never do so. Them not getting back at a proper time was not an issue for me alone during my stay, but other patients too, who often ended up creating a scene by yelling and venting their frustrations at the nurses. It was no help that some staff got snappy when asked for a request or reminded of a request they have not gone through yet. I do understand they can busy still, but some issues are important. A large amount of staff were not the best; however there was a small number of them, particularly one nurse who goes by Jeff, who were kind to us and just plain awesome.

    Psychiatrists:
Without properly assessing many, the doctors (psychiatrist doctors) push patients to medication as quick as their first session. My psychiatrist, Dr. Sager was horrid, unhelpful and had a tendency of not bothering to fully understand my words; I found that he often twisted words to my disadvantage and would put words in my mouth. This led to a longer stay. Like probably all patients in the unit, the longest session I had was about 30 minutes--it was my first one. After, it was a mere 5 minutes each day. No meetings were effective and I was never assessed despite being told I should take antidepressants on my second session.

    Building:
Moving on to the building itself, it is small and cold. The fact that the "blankets" are thin and could easily pass as curtains does not help with the 24/7 freezing temperature. The space in the unit building, as of this time, has hardly any way to release energy. This often left many, including me, frustrated, especially when we were left sitting in chairs most of the day, or in our rooms because we couldn't be in the halls, the most spacious area.

    Food:
The food was ok. I found that when the food they offered for breakfast, lunch, and dinner was not enough, crackers, Tapatío, and juice became the foods we lived off of.

    Patients:
It was not all bad. I found the most helpful thing to be the patients. Most were relatable and more supportive than majority of staff. Nonetheless, even with each other, it seems the treatment and staff support offerred is not effective. Many people in the facility got away with self-harming. Another who was discharged returned the next day! A lot of the patients seemed to have downwards progress.

    Overall Impression:
Overall, I believe this receives one star for the poor support and treatment. While fellow patients were not an entirely bad support system in my stay, there is something quite amiss when it is difficult to look to the nurses and doctors for help, and when patients end up worse than they were before they arrived.

I was hung up on by patient services when I tried to give them vital information about a friend who has severe reactions to certain medications (she's had gene testing). I told them 'I don't need any information on my friend - but YOU need the information I have.' They wouldn't take her doctor, therapist or friend's phone numbers down to give to her. She doesn't have her phone with her - and who the hell remembers phone numbers! Never mind someone who's facing a mental health episode! Negligence from the start. Not a good sign.

I was well cared for and my needs we're met. I had to initiate and advocate conversations about my recovery and that aided me in becoming more adult-like, self-reliant, taking ownership and creating boundaries that I was in dire need of. The staff treated me how I needed to be treated, just like any one else who was a self sufficient adult and by that alone I learned the power of asking for help. I also learned how to enjoy the answer yes and deal or cope with the answer no. It is a matter of perspective. I focused on my recovery, not other people's. I made and created relationships which in and of itself was a miracle for a loner like me, but I also reinforced my boundaries. We all had our own jobs to do and we each did them differently. ( Pertaining to our personal journey)There was no wrong or right. I came out clean and clear and at peace. Everytime, and I mean Everytime I have been here I learn new ideas and skills and heal just a little bit or a whole lot more. Thank you Visit Del Mar staff and team and residents. God Bless You, Everyone, who has and will pass byin and out.🕊️🌠🌈🔐🙏💖👐👏🙌👒Amen, I say to you, one day at a time

Was on the adolescent unit back in 2012, worst hospitalization of my adolescent years. I was put on high doses of Thorazine for psychosis FOUR times a day. I was a walking zombie every day. There was one really cool male nurse though.

I have been a patient 3 different times at Vista
del Mar in Ventura,CA. Dr. Ruths and the entire staff were always very helpful and kind to me. I've experienced severval depressive episodes since 2008 and this hospital assisted me more than 2 other hospitals I've been admitted to due to my depression and anxiety. My only suggestion would be to separate the military ptsd patients from the others. They have different rules and restrictions from other patients which I found confusing and annoying at times. Other than that I felt safe and well taken cared of by Dr.Ruths and staff

As a United States Marine I experienced some horrible traumas while severing this great nation. For many years I have had to deal with the difficult memories without having the tools I needed to correctly understand them. The Military Program at Vista Del Mar has not only giving me those tools but also helped me to truly comprehended my trauma and how to work through it. The Military Program has the best of the best in PTSD therapy. I highly recommend their services to all military and non-military. Thank you to all the wonderful people at Vista Del Mar.

I am currently drafting a lawsuit to be filed tomorrow in Santa Barbara County Superior Court against this hospital for horrific treatment of my client - in particular the duress they placed her under when they threatened to certify her for a 5250 14-day hold with the violent patients if she did not agree to stay longer voluntarily, the fact that they did not give her the 5150 advisement when she was involuntarily admitted and that she was not given access to counsel, although, because I have known her husband for years, we attempted to gain access to her. I am uncertain about whether she received a proper evaluation upon arrival and I am deeply concerned about the original commitment decision that went against the findings of her treating physicians, her family and her. As I read through the comments from people who have been there or had loved ones there, I am shocked, saddened and horrified on all of your (and all of our) behalfs. A society is only as good as we treat those who need us to be compassionate and humane. The comments here, sadly, support my client's story completely.

I had a loved one taken there against her will, the staff was rude, they would mock her, call her names, and made fun of her. At the time I wasn't sure if I believed what she was saying but it's been a few years and she is now mentally doing amazing, and she still stands by how she told us the staff treated her. She cries about it because of how hurt she is that she can't believe a mental health facility can treat their patients that way. Sha said they tied her up and forced her to take medications that she had a bad reaction to when they first gave them to her at the same facility. Just a horrible place over all. Please if you truly care and love your family, don't send them there!

If you have any love for your friends and family who need help, do not, under any circumstances, send them to this pathetic excuse of a hospital. My friend Zoë found the time to write a rather long note, tie a sheet around her neck, and kill herself all while under "suicide watch". Kind of impressive that this place brought a whole new meaning to the term. Instead of watching over the suicidal person to keep them from committing the act, they basically watch them commit suicide. I would rather have been locked in a room with her myself for a month straight than have these people "watching" her. As I seek help for my own mental problems, I will be avoiding this place like Chernobyl. And to the employee who was supposed to be watching my friend: I hope you won your card game, c*nt.
