This is simply an iconic Detroit staple. This historic restaurant is a mandatory stop on any tour of Detroit. The famous Coney Dog is a menu staple and I would also recommend a Dirty Blood beer.
Have eaten here since I was a teen and never had a issue until Sunday evening, Dec. 10th 2017 when it took the young server a little too long to approach me for service. Two other parties that came in not too long after me (a family & a single woman were approached promptly). I hope that this doesn't happen again.
Service was brilliant. I live in NZ and had to experience American food. Can't say it was my style of food (as its totally different to what I eat) but clearly Americans enjoy it as the place was real busy whilst I was there
If you're craving a Detroit Style Coney dog, this is the place to go. I tried a couple of other places in town on a recent trip to Detroit and this was definitely the best!! Classic Coney is the go-to but if you want more bang for your buck, then get the American special. You will need a fork and knife to eat this bad boy.
There's also a decent selection of Detroit brewed craft beers and the staff was also friendly which added to our positive experience.
Charming as ever. Excellent food. Good service. Polite. I live in Maryland, can't get this delicious hometown food.
First time - won't be the last! Great people, great service, great food! No complaints!!
Amazing Coney Island dog experience! From seating size to the staff excellent. A definite must if your in Detroit
If you're from Detroit, you sort of have to choose sides. You are either an "American" person or a "Lafayette" person. I am a declared "Lafayette" girl but let's face it, they're both fabulous. If you are a visitor, choose either one, but just go! Unless you are a vegetarian, you have to have a Coney dog smothered in chili, onions, and mustard while in Detroit. If you are a vegetarian, opt for the delicious fries or a Greek Salad.
We searched for the best Coney Island place in Detroit and this one had good reviews. It obviously does a lot of business at this location. The service was fast and thorough but the food and the facility were average at best rather than exceptional. I guess I was expecting more given all the "Coney Island" restaurants we saw driving around Michigan, and especially Detroit.
The Best table! A legend unto itself. If you are from Detroit, you know it. If you know someone from Detroit, they have taken you there. The fare is standard American Coney dogs, unique to Detroit. An interest layout creates creates views of the surrounding city looking out towards Campus Martius any time of the year.
Iconic Detroit Coney Island. Good food, good service. Only 1 bathroom though.
Chicken wings were delicious. Fires could've been better. Inexpensive, quantity over quality at this restaurant. Would eat there again.
No visit to downtown Detroit is complete without a stop at American Coney Island. I have many post Tigers game and family outing memories at both American and Lafayette Coney Island. Bring your appetite and your Rollaids, because you are going to want to try everything on the menu. I have never been disappointed, you won't be either. Be prepared to stand in line.
American Coney Island is a great place to go if you want to eat a part of history in Detroit, Michigan. Coney Dogs aren't like your typical hot dogs and have a crunch because of the casing. You will still enjoy it and the history of it on the walls.
I was literally just in American Coney, for the first time. The dog was good, but what put it over the top was the Chili and bun. The chili was seasoned beautifullyIt wasn't salty, it was perfect. Very smooth, no heavy feeling after eating it. The bun was warm, and soft, but not flimsy, or mushyNot to mention the staff was very nice and engaging. I know it was early, and I was one a few, but they were very cool, and make you want to come back. Which I will be. Thanks guys!
