A really wonderful, relaxed escape from the rat race. Luxurious, spacious suites with everything you could possibly need. King sized comfy bed and a bath with amazing Ruapehu Views. Spa on the communal deck and Happy Hour with Carel and Elsbeth and other guests on the deck - most enjoyable.

We had picked our two-night stay at Tongariro Suites for a few reasons - the photos looked fantastic, the online reviews were almost all 5-stars, and it was priced competitively. Boy, it did not disappoint! As there are only four rooms - the suites are quiet and private. Had I not seen the 3 other cars in the parking lot I wouldn't have known all suites were booked. The room was immaculate, the continental breakfast provided was very tasty (with fresh bread in the fridge, assortment of jams, milk in a bottle, etc.), and the view on a clear summer's day was simply stunning. The bed was extremely comfortable (meaning it took some determination to rise out of the bed at 7AM for our hike!). Elsbeth and Carel, the owners, made sure to welcome us and took care to learn our names and provide us with ample information on completing the Tongariro Alpine crossing (both in-person and via email beforehand). After our day-long hike (with a last-minute decision to ascend Mt. Doom/Mount Ngauruhoe) it was a perfect and comfortable place to return to. Contrary to some reviews I had read elsewhere; the directions were clear, the suites were easy to find, and all necessary amenities are found in the town of Ohakune less than a 15min drive away. Lastly, you can tell this is truly the pride and joy of the ownership with the care they take in all aspects of their hospitality. If you have a few minutes I would recommend a friendly talk with Carel about the lengths he has gone for the Suites' environmental sustainability. You will certainly enjoy your stay!
