We visited the Gannets at Cape Kidnappers, in the Hawkes Bay. We saw a breeding colony - a breeding colony is a colony where multiple Gannets Breed Together. There are about 6500 pairs of gannets at the colony at Cape Kidnappers. The Nests look like Close-Packed bowls of Droppings and grass. A Gannet can live up to 30 years. A pair of Gannets have One egg every year they mate. The Chicks look like a giant, white and extremely fluffy cottonball. The Parents will take turns Parenting, while the other goes Fishing. The Chicks eat fish regurgitated from the Fisherman Parent. The Young ones will migrate to Australia, at the age of 15-16 weeks. They will come back to the colony at the age of three. The Gannets eat Squid and Fish. The catch their prey by diving in at 45 kph. A gannet will take off, then glide, then flap its wings to change direction. An interesting fact I learned will I was up there was that a pair will breed for life.
