I didn't get along with the owner but the accommodation itself was fair. The common areas like the kitchen and lounges were nice to relax in with other guests and the spaces were large enough for everyone to be comfortable.

Small but neat and tidy. However, a few issues.
First of all, we booked this accommodation months in advance, going with snow denn because they were the cheapest quote we could find. We were emailed an invoice that very clearly states $450 - 13 nights - 1 room - 2 people. When we arrived, months after booking (so if they had made a mistake on the invoice they sent us they had lots of time to notify us), we were told the invoice is wrong, it is $450 per person, despite the fact that our invoice very clearly states that price for 2 people. With no where else to go, we paid double what we budgeted for. This is highly unacceptable and we will be following it up further.
Second, the beds and bedding are incredibly lacking, I can't believe that I have slept on a more uncomfortable bed. We actually ended up throwing the matrasses on the floor (which was difficult with limited room) which made it slightly less uncomfortable. THat said - if we had actually been charged what we were originally invoiced on then I wouldn't have even complained about the beds - you get what you pay for.
How on earth it is deemed acceptable to send a quote to customers but then end up charging them double when they get to your place I don't understand.

Did some woofin over here for a couple of weeks and the rest I got a job and paid. The house need a upgrade while the rooms doesn't have any bedlamp or not enough power outlet and the bed is a little bit uncomfortable. But the kitchen is big and the common area is great. The lodge is cozy with couches and a big teve. George the owner is a great guy and have a lot of to talk about. The WiFi is really great, but it's only at one of the houses. It's a lot of woofin to be done here so it's probably possible to woof for you accommodation if you want to stay a long time.

    Needs new management!!!!!
    It's a simple hostel.
Backpacker side will get extremely noisy and dirty so if you are up for a party or student life then great. The guest side will need some work, unfortunately the walls are paper thin so can hear everything, the kitchen is well stocked with the essentials for cooking. The 'Sky Lounge' is a comfy sunlit room during the day and a freezing ice box by night, which at any point the owner may decide is closed off for his own footy enjoyment.
The owner has woofers who stay there for free in exchange for a bed, most of them don't seem to have worked a day in their lives and shuffle about the place like zombies. Seeing as during our stay there were more woofers than guests, standards were very very low. We did what we could to keep everything clean but it seemed the jobs were not checked over when 'done'. The water pressure is low.
The owner has a 5 minute shower rule whereas the water can sometimes go cool after that time. The sinks in the toilets are so small you can't wash your hands, there is barely room for the taps and the heating.. luckily we knew how to turn it on from the mains but other guests may not. GEORGE the owner likes to switch it off whenever he likes, even when it's below 0 outside. 2 blankets and we were still cold, had to borrow a 3rd from another room!

The common area has no heating except for a very nice looking but not very succesful log fire. Only George himself is aloud to light it for you because he doesn't trust anyone else to do it. Believe me, there's a sign that says so. And when it does get going, you can feel the heat from about a foot or two away and then it disappears. The whole place has single pane windows, no insulation and a serious fly problem.
There is no presence at the front desk and so for many guests, can only reach the owner through a phone in the hall. He often disappears for days on end and leaves the place in the hands of his volunteers, which, when it gets busy is not ideal.
He has been talking about selling the place for years, and still has not.
He no longer sees it as his responsibility to improve even though it is still his to look after.
He is a rude, arrogant, sexist, selfish and seriously senile old man. He needs the place to sell so he can go retire somewhere else, he is not fit to run a place like that.

Rooms were warm, shower was good. However when you go, beware that the owner is rude. We left a drivers license as deposit, and when we went to get it back he was eating breakfast in the kitchen and he made us wait for him to finish. And also if you get put on what he deems to be 'the quiet side' of the lodge, you get told off for even playing a card game

Super friendly and homely. However when I was there the owner was about to sell the place so it might be different now. Free unlimited wifi which is extremely rare in Nz.
