I had a lunch with my wife there yesterday.Felt something stung inside the mouse when I had a spoonfull of the soup before I spit it off.I thought it was a small bone as the soup was a seafood chowder but actually was 1.5 cm piece of wire apparently came off the brush.I told this the host lady in late 30s but she wouldn't say a word for apology but just "Oh you're kidding.thank you(for telling me),it has never happened before".Then left.I couldn't believe there was a such host with a lack of professional mind and couldn't go on the rest of the soup as it might contain more pieces of wire.
I had been 10 years guest and loved their meals,wines and the hospitality but today's disgusting event would get me away from this restaurant.
At the last I leave the advise to the comment viewer there.Double check the meal with your toungue inside the mouth before swallowing it,otherwise the sharp edged wire piece in the stomack would make you feel worse than just being sick.

Good food, not too expensive. I have only given this place three stars because once you turn off the road, signage to the winery is nil. Have to guess where to go. We attended a function at night and there is no lighting at all in the car park ( and there are only eight parks) and one has to negotiate a downhill, loose gravel path in the dark. So, this place is far from user friendly!

Lovely spot for wine and lunch after walking in the beautiful karangahake gorge. Cosy and warm inside with a fireplace on a cold day. Able to cater for gluten/dairy free diets. Try the Gewürztraminer.

Horst's Winery is in the beautiful Karangahake Gorge setting. His wine, food, chocolates and chutneys are all wonderful and lovingly handcrafted.

On our way back to Auckland we stopped for lunch. Fabulous food and wine. If you stop for lunch and your not the dd, you have to have the degustation wine experience. Absolutely the best. The service and the vintners knowledge of his subject was truly wonderful. until the next time.
